Training Your Dog to Meet New People

>> 10/31/09

Most dogs love attention so they have a natural desire to seek out new people who might provide more attention. While it might be cute to see your dog excited to meet someone new, it can be quite terrifying for the other person. Remember it’s hard to tell an aggressive dog from an excited one, especially for people who don’t know that much about animals.

For this reason, you need to teach your dog the proper way to meet and greet new people. You don’t want to stop him from meeting people. After all, this is a critical part of healthy socialization. But you do need to teach him the right way.

Meeting New People at Home

When a new person (new to your dog – not necessarily to you) visits your home, your dog might have a couple of different reactions. Some dogs are a bit threatened by the presence of a stranger so they may bark or seem a bit standoffish. Other dogs are eager to get to know the person so they may rush forward seeking out attention.

In both cases, you need to establish proper etiquette. First, you should have your dog sit and stay before you open the door for the new visitor. This is something you’ll need to practice a great deal. Staying will be a huge challenge for any dog in this situation. Just remember to practice and reinforce your desired behavior with treats and praise.

You should also instruct visitors not to have any contact with the dog – not even eye contact – until they have gotten comfortable in the house. At that point, you can release the dog from the stay command. If the dog is too excited or too forceful in getting attention, make him sit and stay until he calms down. Make sure your guests never give your dog attention until he is calm so they don’t accidentally reinforce a bad behavior.

If your dog barks at the guest, make him sit and stay. If he continues to bark, take him out of the room until he calms down then bring him back out. Again, don’t give him any attention until he is calm.

Try to bring over as many visitors as possible so you can practice these activities a lot and so your dog can become socialized with as many new people as possible in the home.

Meeting New People on the Walk

Dog walking is a great activity for meeting new people. If you go to the park, for example, don’t be surprised if people are eager to pet your canine companion at least once or more during the excursion.

The excitement of the other person, particularly if that other person is a child, can really excite your dog and cause him to be a little too energetic about getting attention. However, you must stick to the same type of routine as described above.

Make sure your dog is in a calm, sit and stay position before allowing anyone to give him attention. You may have to ask the other person to wait, of course, while you do this. Don’t be embarrassed about the time this takes. Your responsibility is to your dog and making him well-behaved not to the rest of the public to let them pet your dog on command.

Jumping Up on People

One of the most dangerous greetings dogs can give in an excited state is jumping up on people. You don’t need a very large dog to knock someone over when the dog is coming at full speed and the recipient of the greeting does not expect it.

You can teach your dog not to do this, and new people not to allow it easily.

When the dog is preparing to jump, the person simply turns around so their back is facing the dog. They don’t say anything to the dog and do not make eye contact with the dog. Because no attention is given, the dog quickly loses interest. At this point, you can make him sit and stay so he can receive the attention he wants.

If you don’t mind your dog jumping up on you at some points, you can train them to do it on command. This will actually reinforce your rule of not jumping on people because the dog will only do it when asked if you practice consistently.

Socialization Training for Puppies

>> 10/30/09

There are several aspects of training when it comes to owning a dog or a puppy. You of the most important training steps you should undertake is socialization. There are two parts to socialization training: first you have to socialize the dog to be around other pets, second you have to make sure they are friendly around strangers. If you forgo socialization training for your dog you are setting yourself up for a difficult road. Dogs that have not been socialized properly may be aggressive towards strangers and other pets. In most cases around strangers they will be shy and hide in your home. So what does socialization training include?

Socialization is allowing your dog to be around other humans and pets. We will first look at the human side of things. To socialize your dog properly for human interaction you should teach the dog commands for how to sit, stay, and to recognize your voice. The best training is often just talking to your dog. This allows them to realize your voice. They will be able to distinguish your nuances for those of others. They will also be able to learn your smell, which can help them feel more comfortable in a social situation. You also want to train them on how to let a human approach. Many individuals just walk up and want to pet your dog, and do so without asking. This can be dangerous if the dog hasn’t been socialized. It is best to teach the dog to sit and stay while allowing a human to pet them. The more contact they have with different humans the more they will be attuned to allowing friends to get close. As a guard dog you may not want to overly work the socialization with humans. It will of course depend on the reason you have the pet. It is best if they are always wary of strangers, but understand that aggression is not warranted.

For socialization with other pets you have two choices in training. First you can go to a training school where there will be other dogs. In these instances the dog gets to be in an environment with dogs working as they are. They can also feel a little more secure with the handlers being right there, and knowing they are there for work. Socialization with other pets is often letting the dogs meet one another and analyze the situation. For most dog breeds it is easier to socialize them with other dogs rather than other pets. You can also go to a dog park and allow other dogs to play while you sit around and watch them. You can of course interact if you feel the need.

Dog Obedience Training Tips

Beauty Is As Beauty Does

One of the signs of a nice dog is that she's willing to be petted or handled by many different people. This is important because it makes grooming, veterinary care, and participation in dog sports much easier. Willingness to be handled is a by-product of socialization. The dog who meets a lot of people learns to expect petting in a variety of situations. She learns that touch is pleasant, not frightening.

Start accustoming Duchess to being handled for grooming and veterinary care when she's a puppy. Take her in your lap and gently brush her. Speak softly to her, saying things such as "That feels good, doesn't it, Duchess?" Lift up her ears and look inside them. Run your fingers around the inside of her lips. Stroke her paws and then pick them up and hold them. Although most dogs hate having their feet handled, they can learn to tolerate it if you start early enough and are persistent. A good time for these handling sessions is while you're watching TV.

At first, handle your dog for only a minute or two at a time, then gradually extend the length of time you spend grooming her. When she's cused to having your fingers in her mouth, introduce her to a soft dog toothbrush. You'll be thankful for all of your prep work when her coat grows out and needs frequent combing or when she needs a bath.

Sitting Pretty

The sit command is one of the easiest to teach and one of the most useful. Pups can learn it at an early age, so it's a great way to accustom them to the training process. Requiring your dog to sit is also a great way to reinforce your status as the leader.

The first thing Duchess should learn is that she gets attention when she sits. Not when she jumps up. Not when she runs away. When she sits. Because sit is often the first command dogs learn, it seems to stick more firmly in their brain, and they often respond to it more readily than to any other command. That's why it has so many great uses.

To teach the sit command, start by getting Duchess's attention. Show her a treat and slowly move it upward so she has to raise her head to see it. Most dogs naturally move into a sitting position when they do this. If Duchess isn't quite there, gently push down on her rump while moving your hand back over her head to give her the idea. When she's in position tell her to sit and give her the treat. Practice for only a couple of minutes (puppies have a short attention span) and repeat several times throughout the day. Soon Duchess will recognize that your uplifted hand signals the sit command even if you're not holding a treat.

Practice using the sit command in different situations once Duchess associates it with the action of sitting. Teach her to sit and wait before you pet her, before you feed her, and before you put her leash on. If you're out in the yard and she wanders away from you tell her to sit so she learns to respond even when you're at a distance. This won't be helpful if she's at risk of being hit by a car, but it can be useful in a more controlled situation when you simply want her to wait for you. (A leash, of course, is the best way to keep a dog under control and should always be used in unfamiliar or unfenced areas.)

To teach the wait or stay command, place your dog in a sit. Hold up your hand, with the flat of your palm toward the dog's face, and tell her to wait or stay (whichever you prefer); then back up a few steps. If your dog remains where she is, praise her. Gradually increase the amount of time she must wait before receiving praise or a reward. If she moves out of place, don't punish her, simply put her back in position and start over.

Jumping Up

Jumping is one of the most common complaints people have about their dogs. It may be cute when a puppy does it, but a couple of months later, when her size has doubled, it can become a problem. You don't want Duchess knocking down Aunt Mary or Baby Sue with her exuberant greeting. Replace jumping behavior as soon as possible with the sit command.

Teaching a dog not to jump up doesn't require any harsh tactics. Ignore anyone who tells you to knee the dog in the chest or push her away. Instead, simply pivot so she misses you. Then give the sit command. When she complies, give her a lot of praise or a treat. Repeat this every time she tries to jump up and insist that other people do so as well.

Often, especially with toy breeds, people say that they don't mind, and refuse to participate in the training process. If you have a large dog, that's not really an option because you don't want to run the risk of someone being injured, even inadvertently. It's not so bad with a toy breed, but remember that even small dogs can snag your stockings or scratch your legs when they jump up. It's better if you teach them the same good manners you would teach a larger dog.

Ways To Curb Your Canine's Biting Tendency

>> 10/28/09

Millions of people are bitten by dogs each year; young children are usually the victim. Not only does this result in a possible health risk for the person who has been bitten, but in the case of kids, it can leave a damaging impression of canines. That is unfortunate. The bond shared between humans and dogs is incredibly strong. Being bitten at a young age can lead to an emotional scar that destroys any chance of enjoying that connection.

The good news is that a canine's biting tendency can be eliminated. Below, I'll explain a strategy that relies heavily upon startling a dog when he bites. I'll also describe the steps you need to take in the event your pooch sinks his teeth into someone.

Curbing The Tendency Through Startle Response

Dogs learn to bite as puppies. If you were to observe them playing with their littermates, you would notice them biting each other while playing. It is natural to them because their mouth is the primary tool they use to hunt. Unfortunately, if your canine's natural tendency to bite is not curbed, it will continue to grow and become a problem for you, your family, and guests.

Many trainers and veterinarians suggest using a "startle response" strategy to teach your pooch not to bite. When he does, make a sharp noise at a high pitch that startles him. If, as a puppy, he were to hurt one of his littermates by biting too hard, this is the noise they would make. When he hears it, he'll know instinctively that he has done something wrong. In some cases, you'll notice that he'll look confused. Take that opportunity to substitute a chew rope or another toy that he can bite. That teaches him that biting is acceptable as long as he doesn't do it to people.

You should also socialize your puppy as soon as possible so he'll learn at an early age what kind of behavior is appropriate around people. Spaying or neutering your dog can also reduce the likelihood of biting.

What To Do If Someone Is Bitten

If your canine bites someone, control him immediately. Then, ask the person who has been bitten whether he or she needs medical attention. Give that person all of your contact information as well as that of your veterinarian. Also, provide your pooch's last vaccination date.

If animal control workers arrive, answer their questions openly; they'll likely want as much information about your canine and the events surrounding the bite as possible. Finally, ask your vet to recommend a professional trainer to help curb the behavior as quickly as possible.

Your dog's biting tendency can be eliminated easily if you devote time toward it when he is still a puppy. Even as an adult dog, the tendency can be suppressed by enrolling him into professional obedience classes. The investment helps ensure the safety of your family and guests.

Obedience Training Your New Dog Is An Essential First Step to Establishing Dominance

>> 10/27/09

Although dogs are domestic animals, yet their behavior get be wild and unpredictable at times. There are instances when dogs tear apart their dog beds, turn the house into a mess and do similar things that are pretty destructive in nature. Dog obedience training teaches your dog to obey orders and keeps his wild side under control. Dog obedience training is very essential if you do not want to have unpleasant experiences of biting and tearing being carried out by your dog. Dog obedience training therefore, is very important for the well being of your dog and those around you.

If you are upset over your dog’s shredding your clothes to bits and pieces and his pooping or peeing all around your place, its time to get into the action and start training him. Make sure that the training process is innovative and fun for both you and your dog. If either of you gets bored along the line, try changing the routine in order to get the most out of the whole process. As the first step, you should train your dog to obey the basic commands at least. Commands such as ‘sit, ‘stand’, ‘go’ and ‘stop’ should be easily comprehendible by your dog. Your dog should obey these orders no matter what, and you should proceed on with your training only after you are sure that your dog is thorough with these basic commands.

There are various ways in which professionals train dogs for obedience, but two of the most popular ones are leash/collar training and rewards training. Leash training is harsher and is suited to more aggressive dogs, whereas reward training is an incentive based training wherein your dog is given an incentive or reward for doing what was desired out of him under the given circumstances.

Incentive based training is always the better approach, as it is less intensive on the dog’s physique and is less expensive as compared to leash/collar training. It saves time and money and is therefore a better training technique; provided your dog actually recognizes that he is being rewarded for doing the right thing. Rewarding your dog constantly is very important. More important than rewarding the dog is to reward him for doing the right thing. The dog should understand that he is being rewarded and he should be rewarded time and again for doing the correct thing. Regular and short training sessions are better and compared to longer and less frequent ones as dog memory is quite short loved, and he needs to be reminded constantly of the right habits until the dog starts performing the right habits instinctively.

Basically, the main reason behind obedience training is not to curb a dog’s natural wild instincts, but it is to direct a dog’s natural behavior to other domestically acceptable vents. The dog might vent his wild side on to a wooden piece or a piece of paper, rather than shredding your expensive clothes to pieces. Therefore, it is important that your dog is more aware of what NOT to do and this would be the start of a successful dog obedience training program.

Some Basics For Housetraining Your Puppy

>> 10/25/09

Puppies should be housetrained as early as possible. Over 80% of dogs in the U.S. are kept inside the home by their owners. Failing to properly teach them to control their bladders and bowels will have frustrating consequences later. Fortunately, providing a healthy does of consistent discipline, patience, and attention upfront can help ensure your pup is housebroken early. There will be accidents, so plan for them. In the same way toddlers eventually learn to use the toilet, your puppy will also learn to avoid making a mess in your home.

In this article, we'll describe two important ground rules that you should follow when housetraining your puppy. We'll also explain why establishing a routine is critical and how to handle the occasional accident when it happens.

Establishing The Ground Rules

Owners who are trying to housebreak their puppies often punish them when they make a mess, even if they don't catch them in the act. Avoid doing this. If you see you pup having an accident, a stern "no!" is good enough. There's no need for punishment; in fact, punishing him can have a negative effect.

Also, be generous with your praise. If your puppy is doing things properly, let him know. Remember, dogs need positive reinforcement from their owners. If you only reproach him when he makes a mess and neglect to recognize his successes, it will have a lasting effect.

The Value Of A Routine

The importance of a regular routine when house training your pup cannot be overstated. The repetition reinforces positive behavior. First, make sure you're providing your pup with plenty of opportunities to go outside; once every two hours is appropriate because they cannot control their bladders for long. Second, choose a specific spot outside that he can use to eliminate, and stick to it. If he has an accident, place the rags you use to clean it up in that spot. The odor will remind him where he is supposed to eliminate.

Third, establish a routine that includes regular feeding, playing, and walking time for him. That will help him adopt a consistent elimination schedule.

Paying Attention And Dealing With Accidents

When your pup is indoors, watch him. Don't allow him to roam freely throughout your house. That is an invitation for him to leave a hidden "surprise" for you. Instead, confine him to a certain area and pay attention to signs that he needs to eliminate. When you notice those signs, take him to his designated elimination spot and praise him for his success.

As noted, your puppy will have a few accidents. Don't punish him. If you catch him making a mess inside, interrupt him without scaring him (avoid yelling or chasing him). Take him to his designated area so he can finish. Then, praise him for it. Too many owners are quick to punish their puppies for having an accident. The result is that a pup learns to fear his owner.

Housetraining a puppy requires patience and diligence. However, if you approach it in the right manner, your pup will not only learn to control himself, he'll learn to trust you in the process.

Dog Training for Beginners

>> 10/24/09

It can be an overwhelming experience to have a dog in your house for the first time. It needs care and attention, but it does also have to learn to behave. So training is an important part of your dogs life.

It looks so simple, when experienced dog trainers trains dogs. But you will probably find even the simplest methods to be difficult in practice. But before you give up, you must remember that a dog try to please its owner. So spend a lot of time with your dog. Then it will both love and obey you.

The best time to start training your dog is between the age of 3 and 16 weeks. Here the bond between it and you will take hold. So if you earn its respect as the master, the training will be easier in the future.

Commands are the first to learn in dog training. But it is not as simple as the experienced dog trainer can make it look. Your dog will probably not obey your commands, when you are trying the same.

It is the tone of the voice that decides if a command is a success or not. Good dog trainers do not posses special abilities to speak with animals. They do just know how dog behaves; and how the right tone of voice can make it obey. And by practicing you can learn the same.

The right command tone is firm but non-threatening. To make the dog obey you, you much establish a relationship between you and the dog, where you are the master. If you miss that, you will not be able to train your dog. And threatening or yelling will not help you. It will just make your dog fear you.

The best way to train a dog is by praising it, when it has done something right. Even though it can distinguish between right and wrong, you have to learn it the difference. And you do that by giving it proper feedback when training.

So by using the tone of your voice to show it, when it has done something right or wrong, you can learn it to distinguish between what is good behavior; and what is not. Again remember that the dog will try to please the owner, the dog will learn to everything it can to follow your instructions.

When you master the tone of the voice, you can start to search for more complicated training methods to take the training even further.

And a final issue; the temperament and intelligence are different for all dogs. So when a method might work on one dog, it might not on another. So learn which methods that works with your dog; and stick to them.

Curbing Leash Aggressiveness And Educating Your Puppy To Stay

>> 10/23/09

You are walking down the street and the next thing you know, your normally loving dog becomes aggressive towards other dogs and people he sees. It's enough to make you want to keep him inside all the time!

Skipping walks is not an option and may exacerbate the problem. Can you curb leash aggression so your daily walks aren't nightmares?

If your dog seems like he is about to become aggressive, divert him with a command like sit or down. This will keep him occupied and should reroute his attention.

Dogs often become very aggressive when they meet other dogs. If your dog does this, it is important that you not physically react when you see a dog on your route. Your dog can pick up on your body signals and will be much more apt to act up. Stay calm and keep the leash firmly in hand without pulling or tensing.

Try using a muzzle or a gentle leader when walking your dog. This should only be a temporary measure but if you are concerned your dog may lunge or bite, these can be very helpful.

If you have tried to curb leash aggression and your dog still misbehaves during walks, it is time to find a good trainer. You need professional help to stop this at once: not only is it disruptive to your own walks, it is dangerous to everyone and every animal you pass on the sidewalk.

Many dogs pull on their leashes, especially when they are first being trained. Stopping this behavior as soon as possible is important. It can lead to more annoyance at the very least. At worst, it can hurt a person, pet, and you. Start early before you have to take more drastic measures.

Teaching your dog to stay can be an immensely useful command, and it will definitely impress other dog owners. As always, use treats and praise to help you teach.

First, tell your dog to sit or lie. When he does, put your hand, palm towards the dog, and say, "Stay." Use a firm voice.

When your dog stays, praise him immediately. Likely your dog will only be able to stay for a second or two at first. This is great; it's a terrific beginning, and he will be able to do it for longer periods as he practices.

Also teach him the release command so he learns when it is time to get up. "Ok" or "Come" are often used. Again, praise and treats make training easier.

As you work with your dog, you can lengthen the time your dog stays. Demand a little more each time before you give him his treat.

You don't want to practice for an hour though. Keep your training sessions short and sweet. Make them fun for your dog, provide lots of praise and rewards, and you'll get results. Five to ten minutes is a great amount of time for each training session, and you can do it several times a day.

Dogs do not respond to long training sessions. They get bored, lose focus, or fail to respond to commands. Remember also to be patient, especially at first. Remind your dog to stay often, until he gets it on his own. You may also have to reteach the basics a few times before it is learned. Knowing they are about to get a treat may make your dog antsy, but be patient and make him obey the command each time before he gets his treat.

As you continue training, your dog will be able to stay longer, even when you are not in the room. You will not always have to provide a treat, but do always praise your dog and his accomplishments.

If your dog all the time keeps on trying to grab your attention, jumps on the people, dribbles or even licks them, then your pet does not need any hard line technique to be controlled because it just need to make you understand, , Here I am, Love me forever. If your dog is a pup, do not try to exceed its puppy training age, as dogs generally get fed up and sometimes also get aggravated with extended training sessions. Common training for five or ten minutes is enough to make your dog learn whatever you want. Not just this, when it performs well and follows you right away, you should admire him and give some prize. Dog biscuits can be a good alternative while admiring dogs.

Persistence is the greatest way to make your dog a fully trained pet. If you patiently wait for its reply, it would certainly respond at your order and will follow whatever you say. During the training sessions and after or before the sessions always admire your dog, pat on its back, give it reward treats on doing fine and by no means use hard line methods while instructing.

Training can be started with simple orders like sit, down, stay, come and more. Your dog will always follow you and your instructions, if treated with persistence and love. A dog adores its teacher when it feels that the owner also loves it the same way. Dogs learn very fast, if trained properly and you can also make your dog learn by following these simple guidelines. Dogs are the most faithful companions of humans, if treated properly and loved always, so always care for your pet dog.

Dog Tricks: How To Teach Your Dog To Cross His Paws

>> 10/21/09

A simple and adorable trick that you can easily teach your dog or puppy is to have her cross her paws. Many pets will do this by accident and it always puts a smile on my face when I witness this cute sitting posture.

You can easily teach train your dog to lie down and look elegant with its paws crossed by following these simple instructions:

Step 1: Start the exercise with your dog in the down position (of course he should already be trained to do so before attempting the 'cross paws' trick)

Step 2: Now have your dog offer his paw on command. If he does not know how to respond to this command yet, simply reach out and grab one of his paws. Be sure to click once (using a clicker) and offer a small treat each time. It is important that your dog remains in the down position while doing this.

TIP: If he still struggles to understand how to give you his paw, simply use the treat and place it in the palm of your hand a few inches is a way from one of his paws. Soon enough, he will naturally move to touch the treat that is in your hand in hopes that you will release the tasty snack. Be sure to click each time he taps your palm.

Step 3: Continue having your dog offer his paw, but be sure to concentrate only on one paw at a time and do so repetitively with a click and a treat.

Step 4: When your dog has reached the stage where you can rely on him to target your hand with one of his paws, slowly move your hand closer to your dog's other front paw. Now in order to offer you is paw, he must lift it up and move over sideways in order to reach your hand.

What may happen is that he may choose to lift the opposite paw instead of continuing with the trained paw. Each time this happens, all you have to do is pull away your hand and simply ignore this response from your dog.

Step 5: Your almost done. When your dog can target your hand as it has moved to the opposite side, near his other paw, quickly snap your hand back at the last second. His moved paw should now land right over the other paw and in a crossed-paw fashion. Be sure to click and offer a treat.

Step 6: Continue repeating this training regimen and each time his paw crosses over, slowly fade your hand away so it is further from the dog. Eventually, your dog will automatically cross his paws when he sees your hand signal, and at increasingly longer distances away from you.

How to Teach Your Dog Tricks

>> 10/20/09

Sit. Stand. Roll over. Paw. Heel. There is something about well-trained dogs that make them better to have in your home than a dog that doesn't listen. The following are five of the most common tricks you can teach a dog, but the possibilities truly are endless. Some people teach their dog how to get the newspaper each morning. Other dogs know how to open doors. And some amazing dogs can even work a television remote!

Training your dog can often be a long and arduous process, but in the end, both you and the animal will reap the benefits. The following are some tips to make dog training a bit easier:

• Give the dog treats. Dogs react to treats like men react to sex. Give the dog a treat if he does something correctly. It is important to bring along treats on every walk and always have them accessible in the house. As the dog begins to learn a trick, slowly wean away the treats.

• Constantly repeat whatever action you want your dog to follow. It's the same concept as practicing. The more a dog sees how a trick is done, the easier it will be for them to replicate it over and over.

• Never take a day off. It is important to work with your pup numerous times throughout the day in order to emphasize and reemphasize the trick at hand. • Use both verbal and physical commands. Kids are often to study out loud, which allows them to see and hear the material. The same concept can be applied to dogs. Associate different hand actions with different tricks. If you want your dog to sit, sternly shout "Sit," while putting your hand in a fist. If you want the animal to roll over, say the command and move your hand in a circular motion.

With the proper amount of time and patience, your dog has the ability to perform any trick in the book. Just remember that dogs do not speak the same language as humans, so becoming frustrated and yelling at the animal will get you nowhere. Dogs can sense heightened stress levels, and lower, calmer trainers will have a greater success rate than those who become infuriated. The best way to remain calm is to always keep in mind that dog obedience training is supposed to be fun.

Dog Training Tips -- REVEALED! -- 8 Super Neat (and Powerful!) Dog Training Tips. Watch 'em Boost Pooch Popularity!

>> 10/18/09

Fluff LOVES to bark. She barks at EVERYONE. I now own a pair of shredded shoes, (tasty leather) and she just did her business on the latest National Geographic!

It's maddening to try to deal with a dogs behavior headaches by yourself. In spite of this madness, fast advances DO happen when using a powerful system to train your dog daily. GIANT improvements can be made in only 7 days.

Training your dog can be a lot of fun for both of you, as long as you have good information and some patience. With the right info, you'll quickly see that your dog can learn new commands quite fast, and you'll begin to enjoy the lessons. It's important for Rover to know basic commands such as Come, Sit, Stay, and Heel. This will help keep him out of harms way around cars, and in public parks.

One person should be in charge of training your dog. This will make it easier for you and the dog because of familiarity, and the consistency of the training method. Everyone who lives with the dog should help to train the dog by following the methods of the primary trainer. When children help, they should be supervised, preferably by the primary trainer.

Sessions should be less than 15 minutes long, because of a dogs shorter attention span. Sessions can be 10-15 minutes long every day, or every other day. If you've had a bad day or don't feel very patient, it's probably best to skip a session, since you won't be at your best.

For fastest results, blend the commands you've been working on into the dogs daily life. For example, if you've covered the Sit command, try using that throughout the day. Remember to reward your pooch every time he displays the correct behaviour.

If you use food rewards, have your training sessions before your dogs mealtimes to make sure that he is hungry and motivated.

Start the instruction in a quiet area, by yourself. Try to make yourself the most interesting thing in the room, by minimizing distractions. This will make it easier for her to focus on learning the new command. Once she has mastered the command, add distractions. These could include having other people present, or conducting the lesson in a different room.

After she's demonstrated proficiency with the new commands, reinforce them using your body in different positions, then in other rooms of your house, and finally in the park with a leash. Verbalize the new commands while she is on your left or right, and with you standing and sitting. She will soon realize that no matter where you both are, or what your body language is, you want her to do the same thing each time. It's crucial to reward her every time that she's successful with the command. Don't react when she is unsuccessful.

You might be teaching a previously trained dog. That's OK. Grown dogs will usually have longer attention spans than pups, allowing for faster learning. This helps to compensate for some incorrect training that might need to be unlearned.

For example, your dogs earlier training might have caused her to associate a particular word for a particular behaviour. Maybe your dog is having difficulty grasping the right behaviour for the word Come. You could try using the word Here, instead. Be sure to use the identical training procedure.

Every time that you move to a new location or situation using a newish command, you might need to back up a step in your training. This is very normal, and not a cause for alarm. It's part of your dog learning to focus on your command, despite many possible distractions.

8 Dynamite Dog Training Tips:

* One person is the chief trainer

* 15 minutes of lessons every day, or every second day

* Using food rewards? Train before dogs mealtime

* Use quiet environment to start each new command, indoors is good

* Mastery of command? Alter body language, use distractions, change environment

* During daily life, use learned commands to reinforce lessons learned

* Reinforce commands by using during daily life (that's the funnest part!)

* Back up as needed when training

Dog Training Tips: Your Dog Jumps on You- How to Fix it Fast! (2 Secrets - 2 Solutions)

>> 10/17/09

Granny gets invited to your house. When she comes in, your dog happily jumps up on her, causing her head to good crack against the wall. Hey, Grandma, be more careful!

An extreme example? Maybe. How about this:

You've made arrangements to meet friends at your favourite restaurant. You're out with your dog for a speedy walk, so that she can do her duty. Tramping through a mud puddle, she decides to jump up on you getting mud all over your pants. Grrr! Will changing pants make you late?

Hazardous for Grandma? Sure. Annoying for you and your guests? Yes. Is your dog a jumper upper?

It's a problem that has some easy solutions.

Here are some answers.

ATTENTION!

The main reason that dogs leap up is their excitement. When you get home, your dog is so happy to see you that he leaps on you to greet you. This is not the best way for them to express this, and you can make that clear. Although your dog is excited to see you and wants attention, when he jumps on you, don't give it to him.

When you give your dog positive or negative attention, you're showing him that his behaviour is OK. A few simple yet highly effective methods are available to change the way your dog acts.

TURN YOUR BACK:

Turn your back on your dog when she jumps on you, or is about to. She believes that jumping on you is the best way to get your attention. Don't make eye contact, and completely ignore her, and her behaviour until she settles down. Praise and pet her when she stops jumping on you. This will help her remember the behaviour that you want from her.

SUBSTITUTION:

Or instead of turning away, you can give your dog something else to do when they jump up. For instance, commanding them to Sit is a good way to encourage a different behaviour. Be sure to lavish your dog with praise and attention when they complete a command successfully. Soon, your dog will make the association that lunging on you gets them nothing, while sitting gets them plenty of enjoyable attention.

When your dog jumps up on you, is it just annoying? It can become dangerous if your pet jumps on the elderly or children. It's best to train your dog to keep everyone safe.

2 SECRETS:

* Dogs jump up on you because they love you, and are excited to see you

* By giving them give positive or negative attention, you reinforce their behaviour

2 SOLUTIONS:

* Show your back to her when she jumps up

* Give a command: Sit, Go to your place

Remember, everyone loves a courteous dog.

7 Tips You Must Know Before Training Your Chihuahua

* Training your Chihuahua to be your Best Bud

We have all seen the tiny Chiwawa, small enough to fit in the crook of your arm but mighty enough to take on an intruder ten times its size. The Chi dog is a special breed of dog that craves attention and will strive very hard to make you happy. But just like any other dog, attitude comes with discipline and puppy training is the key.

* Start with the Number One Basic Rule

The first sixteen weeks of your Chihuahua's life are very formidable. Since many live to be eighteen years old, what you do in the beginning can shape them into either a personable companion or a snippy little tyrant. Dogs are all creatures of their heredity when they used to run in packs and every pack has a leader. Puppy training your Chiwawa to recognize you, as the leader is the very first thing that they need to learn to put them at ease.

* How do I know my Chihuahua is Happy with Puppy Training?

The Chi dog is intelligent and attentive to its leader, which is you. Beginning with potty training, spend the necessary time, encouraging and praising your dog and reward with treats. Be careful not to fuss over your Chi dog and do not reward unless an order is obeyed. When one puppy-training goal has been reached, move on to the next. Crate training is important in establishing their territory and when praised and rewarded, your dog will look forward to learning a new lesson. Remember, when you are happy, your Chiwawa is happy.

* The Chihuahua, A Social Butterfly

Socialization and obedience is part of puppy training. Your Chiwawa needs to know what is expected of them in public and around other dogs and people. This is a huge step in building your bond that will last a lifetime. You will begin to form as a team, each knowing the other's moves, just like a best friend. Your dog wants to be a huge part of your life and going on outings can be a real treat for both of you when your Chi dog is trained to interact well with others.

* Should I let my Chihuahua have the Run of the House?

A Chiwawa does not like to be alone but you can't take him/her to work with you or to church. Puppy training to stay alone without anxiety separation is another hurdle that must be jumped. Remember, you are the leader and your Chi needs guidance as to what his/her role is when you are away. With proper training, your dog will not be afraid, anxious or angry upon your leaving. It will just be a part of the routine to go to the crate when you need to depart.

* Keeping your Chihuahua Healthy

Do not overfeed your Chiwawa. An overweight dog gets tired and sluggish and is bad for their health and attitude. Dogs are not people and their systems do not react the same as ours. You are doing damage when sharing your food or overfeeding because you think they are hungry. Get tips on the proper weight from your vet and stick to it. Having a Chi as your best bud can be very rewarding for a long time for both of you when proper puppy training is correctly put into action.

* Last thing - Be Consistent in Your Puppy Training!

I can't stress how important it is to be consistent in training your Chihuahua. If you allow your Chihuahua to bite and tear an old t-shirt, you are actually expecting it to do the same thing your beautiful dinner gown one day. They do not know how to differentiate which fabric is allowed to bite and which is not.

The 5 Most Important Things to Teach Your Puppy in Their First Year

>> 10/15/09

If you've decided you're ready to get a dog or if you already have a new puppy and you feel like things are quickly getting out of control, it's not too late. There are a few things you can teach your dog that will make your life easier and will make them a better pet. This article will show you the top five things that you should teach your puppy during the first year. If you do this, your dog will be not only a pet, he'll be a companion and a friend.

Potty Training

With a new puppy, the easiest way to teach toilet training is through the use of a crate. Obviously you'll need to take the puppy outside during the day, but while in a crate a puppy will not go to the bathroom unless you fail to hold up your end of the deal and take them outside periodically (once in the middle of the night is fine for a young puppy).

Get in the habit of asking your dog if they need to go outside, "need to go out?" This will help them associate the question with the action. As they get older, when you ask the question you can watch their behavior and see if they need to.

Once you're outside, you can even teach a command to tell them to do their business. In fact, I use "do your business" for #1 and "hurry up" for #2. Again, if you start saying your phrase of choice when they start going, very soon they will "go" on command. This is very useful when the weather is unpleasant and the dog really doesn't want to be outside. It's equally important when the dog would rather roam and sniff than take care of business.

Sit, Down, Stay

"Sit" is the easiest of these three commands and should be taught first. Even a young puppy can learn this. "Down" is a submissive position and can be difficult for some dogs. Never punish a dog after putting them in "down" or it can lead to trust issues. "Stay" is more of an advanced command and should be taught after your puppy is six months old. Before that their attention span is too short.

Come

I prefer the "here" command for this. In my opinion this is the most important command to teach your dog for their safety. Fortunately it's very easy. Every time you're outside with your puppy (ideally in an enclosed area or even better on a long lead), have some treats in your pocket. My favorite is dried bits of cut up hot dog in a ziplock. Issue the command and gently draw the puppy in with the lead. Give the treat and lots of praise when they reach you.

Very soon your puppy will come running as fast as possible when you say "here." Eventually you can slowly replace the treats with praise, but always give your dog praise when they quickly return. One warning: never punish your dog after calling them with this command. They should always be enthusiastic when they return to you, and punishment can harm this attitude.

Leash

It's nice to be able to train your dog to walk beside you with a leash, however I recommend waiting for serious leash training until the puppy is six months old. Dogs tend to want to pull and go where they want to go. It's your job to teach your puppy that a leash walk is an interactive thing between the two of you. They should be at your side, paying attention to you and where you're going.

Eventually you might even be able to walk you dog without a leash and have them stay at your side as if they were on a leash. If you have difficulty with this training, a basic obedience class can be a huge help.

Off

Some dog owners confuse their puppies by using the same command when they want their dogs to lie down or get off of the furniture or stop jumping on people. I prefer the "off" command for the latter.

With wild dogs, the leader of the den always chooses the highest, most comfortable, and most defensible position. In the home, this is the sofa and bed. When dogs jump on furniture, it is an act of dominance. They are subtly challenging your authority. Let them "win" often enough in these small challenges and they won't listen to you like they should.

If your dog jumps on furniture, give them the "off" command while pushing them away from the furniture. You can and should also use the same command when they try to jump on people (another dominant act). This command is very quickly learned because it's natural for the leader (you) to keep them out of their favorite places.

There are many other things you can and should teach your dog. They are eager to learn if you'll put forth a little bit of effort. These lessons are also a great way to reinforce with your puppy that you're the one in charge. To us this position might seem a little mean, but it's a natural thing for dogs - they need a leader or they will become one. Work on training your dog a few simple things and they will be a great companion and friend.

Popular Commands to Teach Your Dog

>> 10/14/09

When you bring a dog into your home, you also take on certain responsibilities and those include teaching your pet some specific, useful commands. These are commands that are going to come in handy throughout your relationship with your pet and that will help your pet be a better companion.

Below is a breakdown of some of these commands and how to teach them to your favorite canine.

Command: Sit

The first command you should ever teach your dog is "Sit." This is going to be integral to so many other commands that it needs to be mastered as soon as possible.

To teach your dog the command, start by holding a tasty treat above his nose. Now move the treat backward over his head. As his nose moves to follow the treat, he'll sit down. The moment his hindquarters hit the ground you should praise him and give him the treat.

Don't try to force your dog to sit by pushing on his rear quarters. This can actually do damage to their vulnerable hindquarters.

When your dog can sit on command, you can move onto the next command.

Command: Stay

Another vital command for your dog to learn is "Stay." This command will help you gain control over your dog which could be very useful in some situations.

To teach this command, you first need to have your dog sit. Now place your hand and a treat in front of your dog's nose. Say the command, "Stay." Now walk away a couple of steps. If the dog remains seated, you can release him by using a command such as "Release" or "Free." When your dog comes to you, put him back into a sit position, reward, and praise him.

Keep repeating the process regularly. Each time you can move further away from your dog or wait longer periods of time before releasing him.

Command: Come

Another command that will help keep you in control of your dog is "Come." Once you have mastered "Sit" and "Stay," you can begin working on this command which can be useful if your dog ends up off leash or is getting into trouble in or out of the house.

To teach this command, you will either need a large area indoors or a long leash outdoors. You can purchase leashes that are up to 30 feet in length.

Start by having your dog stay then move a short distance from your dog and say "Come." Ideally, your dog will come to you and will stand or sit in front of you or beside you. If that happens, praise and reward with a treat. Occasionally, your dog may try to run past you. When that happens, you need to grab his collar before he gets too far. Bring him back to where you want him, put him in the position you want, then reward and praise.

Keep repeating this command with and without distractions. You can also increase the distance between the two of you before you give the command.

Command: Take

Another command you want to teach your dog is "take." This command is going to help you actually teach your dog certain behaviors you don't want. For example, if you want your dog to not steal food off the table, teaching this command can prevent that type of behavior.

To teach this command, put your dog in a sit position. Place a treat in the palm of your hand and hold it out to your dog. If he tries to take it, close your hand. When he moves his nose and mouth away from the treat, open it up again and hold it there. After a bit of time, say "Take" and allow your dog to eat the treat.

Keep repeating this process frequently so you can teach your dog to only take things on command.

Command: Off

To make your dog a good citizen, you want him to also learn "Off." This command is a little different than some of the others. For one, it can be used for a wide range of purposes, including teaching your dog not to jump on people or telling your dog to get off of the couch.

Consider how you are most likely to use the command and start practicing that way. For example, if you want to use the command for keeping your dog off the furniture, encourage your dog to jump up on the couch then say the command and move him off the couch. When he gets down, praise him and reward him.

Keep repeating as long as necessary.

These aren't the only commands you might want to teach your dog but they will serve as the basis for most of the more advanced commands.

Dog Barking: How to Stop a Dog Barking Using Entertainment

An understanding of the causes can help you stop your dog barking problems, because when you know the causes, you can formulate a strategy to combat them.

Most dogs bark. Barking at people or animals can be a natural reaction. Your dog may bark two or three times, or for several minutes, but he stops barking when the thing he's barking at stops or goes away. This sort of barking can be resolved with training.

This is a very natural part of a dog's behavior. Certain instincts are very difficult to overcome through training, but this one can be sorted.

You see, your dog's barking is due to his instinct to protect and defend a territory. But his instincts can be reasoned with in this case, because they also tell him that the territory isn't his so much as it is yours. Once he completely understands that it's not his job to be territorial, he'll be glad to give up the responsibility.

Your goal shouldn't be a complete elimination of barking, because his instincts will rebel at that point. It's okay for your dog to announce something by barking a couple. He's just trying to get your attention. However, if barking has become excessive, or if your dog is becoming too aggressive, it's time to step up your training routine.

Do this by teaching him a new command: the command to 'quiet.' This doesn't mean for him to never bark; it means simply for him to stop barking when you say it. This will relieve your stress, and eventually solve the barking problem.

There are three things you will need for this training. First off, his favorite treats for reward, but don't let him see them at first. Secondly a diversion that will create some quiet in him for a while, but not something that frightens him. Finally get a friend to play knocking at your door

Once you have your treats and your distraction method prepared, your friend should knock. After one or two barks, use your diversion. A spray bottle can work perfectly for this, squirt his face with a little water. When he turns to look at you, surprised (and quiet), say "Quiet." Then have a treat ready to give him. Just be sure to reward him with the treat before he can start barking again.

Your friend should then come in and praise your dog. Ultimately he'll accept that when you say it's okay, it really is okay. He doesn't need to keep barking, and his master has a handle on the situation.

Eventually and with practice your dog will begin to understand that he should not bark more than a couple of times.

There are some barking situations where the dog barking continues for no reason. In these circumstances, there may be some underlying causes and you should research and have a look at the many online dog training guides available. Don't punish your dog,it will only make it worse.

There are any number of behavioral issues, but if you understand the underlying causes, you have a good chance of addressing them with the correct form of training.

Start Your Basset Hound Training With Puppy Socialization

Basset Hound training may not be a very easy task because of this breed's strong-willed attitude. Being scent hounds with exceptional skill for tracking, they tend to follow what their noses tell them rather than obey commands of their masters.

But that doesn't mean Basset hound training is impossible. With proper methods of training, there is no way you cannot tame and train this breed with large head yet with sad and slightly sunken eyes.

The ideal way to start your Basset Hound training, or training any dog breed is through puppy socialization. Socialization period should start when the puppy is around three weeks old and ends around 12 weeks old. Puppy socialization period is important because it is during this time that a puppy develops relationships with people, other dogs as well as with other living beings in his environment.

In order to have a social and non-fearful dogs, here are some tips to consider:

Early handling. Puppies that are handled by humans early, say during the first five weeks of life are more confident, easier to train and do well as household pets. So from the moment a puppy was born, stroking her belly, touching her all over while talking to her gently while help you come up with a confident and well-socialized dog when he grows up.

Meet many people. A puppy should not be confined inside the four walls of your house much more inside the crate for the rest of his puppyhood. Before he reaches 12 weeks of age, a puppy should meet as many people as possible. Do this in a fun and non-threatening experience or else your pup will develop fear of strangers. Meeting with other dogs as well as other animals is also a great idea. Just make sure that you're pup is fully vaccinated before you take him to meet new friends.

Explore. As what I mentioned above, a puppy should not be confined to one spot alone. They should be given the freedom to explore your house, inside and outside. Just continue to supervise him to prevent mischief but give him the freedom to check things out for himself. If he wants to check the flower pot, let him. Just make sure the plant isn't poisonous neither can cause allergy.

Grooming. Grooming, bathing, clipping the nails, brushing the teeth are necessary to keep your puppy clean and pleasant. Apart from that, the procedures also contribute to your pup's socialization period.

Now that you have all these tips, there is no reason puppy socialization period should fail. And one last tip, always have fun with whatever Basset Hound training you have in mind.
