Will Your Dog Thank You for Homemade Dog Food?

>> 11/30/09

Family dogs in America, like their human counterparts, are becoming more obese and less healthy. This is primarily because of diet and decreased activity. Many people research dog information sources to learn what dogs need to eat and how much they should eat. If you are one of the people who want to make your own dog food at home, do the research carefully.

If, however, this is not appealing to you, consider a provider such as flint river ranch dog food, which manufactures human grade dog food. Many safe dog treats are also available that are safe for humans to eat. Some dog owners have started their pets on diets that are tailored to meet their pet's special dietary needs.

Once the owner knows this dog information, they can be certain they are giving their dogs the nutrients they need. Concerned owners have started to use their dog information to cook and/or bake their own dog food and snacks. Use caution! If you make your own dog food the wrong way, you can end up harming your dog more than helping them.

For example, there may be certain types of fats or meats that your dog's breed cannot eat so you would want to avoid using those. Foods like grapes, chocolate, raisins, and bread dough may be safe for humans but are very bad for your dog, Some companies will make an all natural dog food for you. These companies have done the necessary research and they know your dog information, especially the vitamins and minerals your dog has to have to survive and be healthy. They are also aware of what foods your dog should avoid as they make him sick.

Some companies, like the one that makes flint river ranch dog food, make their food to be human grade. This means that a person could eat it without fear of illness. Today you can buy dog treats that are safe enough for people to eat. Specialist pet bakeries create these snacks and bake them just as if they were cookies or bread. Ask your pet bakery if you can bring your dog in for samples so you may buy the dog treats he loves most. No matter which diet you choose for you dog, remember that exercise, rest, and plenty of fresh water are also needed to keep him healthy.

Whatever food you decide to give your dog, remember to research it so that you are giving your dog the best possible life. Every dog needs enough water, rest and exercise in order to stay healthy. Don't forget that we are supposed to be our dog's best friends, and we need to make the right decisions for them.

The health habits of dogs in America are mirroring those of the American people. Today, family dogs are fatter and more unhealthy than just a decade or two ago. This is mostly attributed to being less active and eating less healthy diets. This trend leads to more illnesses, higher veterinarian bills, and shorter life spans.

Stop Your Dog From Pulling On The Leash - Expert Discloses Method

>> 11/29/09

This is such a common problem and sometimes quite entertaining, especially if you see a youngster being pulled along by a strong dog. Or even a grown up being pulled for that matter. But you love walking your dog and it's really not a joke if he won't listen to your commands. To stop your dog from pulling on the leash you need to know a few tricks.

Why they pull on their leashes is because they actually can walk faster than we can and they just can't wait up. There basic instinct kicks in to chase when they see other animals or pick up strong scents. It's natural and we have to just work around it.

Naturally it's best to start with your training when he's still a puppy, but if this is not possible you can teach an old dog new tricks. A word of advise, it's better for the dog's health if you don't use a choke collar. They are known to cause damage to the throat and vocal cords.

Also start training your dog indoors and where there are very little distractions. Do not put a harness or leash on him yet as your aim here is to teach your dog to follow you. Place an object on the palm of your hand and show your dog what you have. Say the word "touch" and let him then try to touch the object with his nose. Hold your hand to your side while doing this. Walk away and let the dog follow you to touch the object again. He must never be in front of you. He must always follow you then touch the object. Give him a nice treat if he touches the object but is not in front of you.

You will obviously show a lot of patience with your dog as he is learning a completely new command and behavior - this takes some time. Remember to give him a treat and a hug every time he manages to touch the object but stays behind you.

If you are happy that he can now follow you on command, then put a harness on him and let him follow you and touching the object again. He now needs to get used to the harness while following your command. Gradually take him outdoors into the garden and keep on practicing. Once he is used to the harness, clip on the leash and now he has to follow you, touch the object and stay behind or next to all the time. Give him a treat intermittently. He will soon realize what you want and will then happily walk with you in the garden. You are now ready to take him on a walk outside of your yard.

When he is ready take him out of your yard and onto the sidewalk or to a park. If he still needs some more training then you can do this there as well. To stop your dog from pulling on the leash is easy and there will be no more running after your dog, as he will now be well trained and an envy for other dog walkers.

Dog Training - A Must

>> 11/25/09

If you are considering bringing a new canine addition to your home, there are several things to consider. Having the right tools and the proper training will make the transition to a dog-owner family easier on you and your dog. While it is viable to trains dogs yourself, those who don't have experience working with dogs will be wise to invest in a dog training course.

If you hear stories of other dog owners who have failed, don't lose heart. Whether you have owned a dog that has run your house, or simply want to avoid it, dog training school is a necessity. Dogs don't misbehave because they are not good, but lack of training can result in poor behaviors. By sending your dog through a training program, you are doing your part to ensure a happy relationship.

What are the biggest reasons to use a dog training program instead of trying it yourself?

Often, pet owners get caught in a power struggle with their dog. Learning the right body language, tone of voice, and reward system for your dog are essential to keep you in control. Owning a dog is like being a parent, and some well given advise can save the day.

Dog obedience school provides young puppies and fully grown dogs the opportunity to socialize. Learning to interact with other canines is an important skill when you take your dog out. By going through a dog obedience course, owners will develop friendships for themselves and their dogs.

Owners who take a class with their dogs with a formal setting will be learning commands in the ultimate environment. Here, the instructor knows how to teach the owner to "speak dog" and use body language that will get the appropriate responses. Often times there are simple things that work well with dogs that the general public might not know. Having an instructor handy will give them the opportunity to watch how well you work with your dog, and to give you pointers to correct things.

When working in a class setting, your dog will have the advantage of learning with distractions. This is an advantage, since once the dog goes home where there are not the distractions, the skill set should transfer easily. This works better than adding distractions after a skill is learned, where the distraction will actually make the dog forgetful.

Putting your dog through obedience school is the beginning of a long and satisfying relationship. Having a dog that is well trained results in one that is more secure, confident and well behaved. Trusting its owner and his expectations will result in consistent behavior. Dogs that have gone through obedience school are also safer around children and visitors, and it also prevents undesirable behaviors.

Once your dog is well trained, enjoy the benefits of pet ownership. Owning a dog will reduce your risks of illness, and provides a great outlet for exercise and social interaction as well. That will benefit you and your dog!

3 Big Mistakes Dog Owners Make When it Comes to Dog Training!

>> 11/23/09

Puppies are cute, but unless they are trained well, they can grow up to be very disagreeable. Responsible dog owners need to invest time in training their pup. Oftentimes most people make the same mistakes when training, especially with their first dog. Below you will see the top 3 most common mistakes that uninitiated dog owners make when training their new puppy.

1. You do not have to assert your Alpha role by always "punishing" your dog when you call him. I refer here to doing something to him that he does not enjoy doing. For example, it is not a good idea to call your dog, and then clip his nails. Another unpleasant thing for the dog is to have his leash strapped to a post. When you call your dog, let him associate this with something pleasant. Use a cheerful voice, pet him, and tell him what a good dog he is. Let him associate good things with your call, and he will come to you every time. He will also be trusting of you during unpleasant tasks like having his nails clipped.

2. Do not presume that a dog will eventually grow out of bad behaviour; it is simply not going to happen. You are the Alpha, and you must assert that. A dog wants to be trained, and he wants to live comfortably in your home. This is best possible when he knows the house rules. So from the start, take time to teach your dog what is, and is not acceptable behaviour at home.

3. Do not hit your dog as a method of training. This will only make your dog aggressive, or at the very least, a submissive wetter. Instead, focus on reinforcing good behaviour with doggie pats and rewards. The best dog is a happy dog.

Labrador Training Techniques

>> 11/22/09

Labradors are one of the easiest dogs to train. They all have a massive desire to please people. The simple commands such as Sit and down are easy to master and can take only a few minutes for you to start seeing the results in your dog. The basics have to be mastered first before you can tackle the more complex tricks like beg and kisses. Which makes sense really when you think about it? We all want a perfectly behaved dog when we are out in public. You must continue to have patience with all your Labradors training. They love to be trained and over time you can have your Labrador performing some really fantastic stuff.

Labradors don't normally suffer from being scared of loud noises such as a door slamming or fireworks but occasionally they are. It is possible to train you Labrador to not be scared of these sounds. This can be done with several procedures or techniques but the most common is playing a tape of the sounds over and over again in the same room as the dog. Gradually increasing the sound over a period of time will desensitise your Labrador to the noises it was once scared of. Socialising you Labrador from a very early age can help to prevent these anxieties in its later life.

Labrador problems are generally not a major concern for pet owners and with timely Labrador training you can easily ensure that your pet behaves in an appropriate manner at all times. http://www.labradortraining.org

Dog Too Spoiled To Walk On Leash

>> 11/21/09

Dear Mr. Katz:

I have a 4 month old female pup, AmStaff/Boxer (we think - she was a rescue). She responds well to all training, EXCEPT for walking and heeling.

We've practiced the loose-leash "turning on a dime" technique described in your book and audio tape at length, but she refuses to cooperate.

It's not a matter of distraction - when I attempt to train her in this style, she pulls back with all her strength. When the loose leash is snapped, she sits, paws braced, or lays down on her back. These responses are immediate.

I've tried instantly righting her, and continuing the training, but she responds as above just as quickly. This can go on indefinitely. I've tried correcting her with a low "No," and praising her if she responds correctly for even an instant. I've tried using treats to get her to at least walk with me briefly...... all to no success.

What else should I try?
Thanks,
Geoff

Dear Geoff,

It's a good question you've asked.

First, you DO NOT want to work the dog around distractions at this point in the game.

Second, you should not be telling the dog, "No!" and jerking the leash for this behavior. Instead, you need to simply glue the leash to your belt and keep walking.

Now here's where your problem will arise: You've already inadvertently taught your dog that if she kicks and screams long enough (or rolls on her back and throws a tantrum)... that eventually you will stop walking and come to see what's wrong.

The only problem is... NOTHING IS WRONG!

It's like if I take you in a helicopter and drop you off in the middle of the desert and tell you that I'm going to leave you there, but will eventually come back and pick you up in half an hour (or 2 hours, or a whole day!!!) ... you will simply sit there and not attempt to remedy your situation, as you know that I'm coming back to pick you up. Eventually, this situation will end and I'll come back and your problems will be over.

However, if I instead drop you off in the middle of the desert and tell you that I'm never coming back... then all of the sudden you're in a position where you MUST START TRYING DIFFERENT THINGS TO BETTER YOUR SITUATION.

Maybe you start to look for some twigs you can start a smoke fire with, to draw the attention of an airplane overhead.

Or perhaps you climb on top of a rock, to look for a nearby highway so that you can hitch hike to a nearby pay phone.

But the point is... you start actively looking for a solution because you IMMEDIATELY REALIZE THAT YOUR SITUATION WILL NOT SIMPLY END BY ITSELF.

And this is the same thing you need to teach your dog. And it's a lesson that will extend beyond this one exercise. Your dog must learn that just because she does not want to do something DOES NOT mean that you will give in and let her not do the exercise.

BECAUSE THIS CREATES A SPOILED DOG.

So... what should you do? The answer is really quite simple. Just keep walking. No matter how much the dog kicks and screams and throws a tantrum, remember: You're not asking her to do anything she cannot do if she chooses. We're asking her to SIMPLY WALK WITH YOU.

Now, in light of everything you've already taught her (remember, every action you do teaches your dog something)... you may have to keep walking a quarter of a mile before she finally realizes that you're not stopping and that it's easier to walk alongside you than it is to be dragged on her rump.

Trust me... it won't be a pretty scene for your neighbors to look out their window and see you dragging your dog on her rump down the street.

But when you will be able to take that same dog out for a casual stroll later that evening, your neighbors will wonder if you didn't trade your dog in for a different one and will gasp at how well she walks alongside you on the leash.

The 5 Must Know Considerations To Have A Training Collar In Best Use

>> 11/18/09

Training collars are the most popular and commonly used tools in dog training. The basic ones are called in different names like choke collar, training collar, slip collar, or correction collar. To be effective, like any tools, training collars need proper use. Here are the most important considerations when using them:

1. Does it fit your dog? It is important to take not of the size of the collar to make it easier to use and safer for your dog.

2. Is it put on accurately? Putting the collar on your dog has the possibility of being wrong and it poses potential harm and ineffectiveness.

3. Is it properly used? A training collar should NOT be used for punishment but rather a tool to keep him reminded of his restrictions. So avoid constant pressure when using the collar.

4. Are you using the right type of chain? See to it that the weight of the chains and the size of the links are proportionate to the size and weight of the dog.

5. Is the placement of the collar good? The collar must be properly placed on the dog because many possibilities depend upon it. For instance a training collar that is too tight could be hardly put on or off. Then again, the one that is too loose may unintentionally fall off of the dogs head. This is the reason why a dog owner should remember that an ideal size of a collar fits securely yet comfortably.

Also, it is necessary to be aware that in order to use properly a training collar which is too long for the dog, the handler needs a good deal of skill when using it. For proper sizing and measure of the dog, it is best to use a tape measure. Then provide 2 to 3 inches allowance for that measurement. Example, if your dog has a neck 14 in circumference, it is better to buy a training collar that is 16 long. But there are available chain slip collars which are basically sized in two inch increments.

Now, when fitting the pet collar properly, the part of the chain connected to the harness must be placed at the top of the dogs neck. This way, the collar can be easily released. Finally, purchase a high quality training collar that is both strong and well made for safety purposes.

Tips For Increasing Dog Social Interaction

>> 11/17/09

Dogs are similar to humans in that they need to socialize in order to learn the skills that they need to live peacefully with others. When you only have one dog as your pet it is sometimes hard to help them develop those skills if they never have the opportunity to do so. There are a number of ways that you can help your dog get the social skills he or she needs in order to live peacefully with other dogs and people.

Dog parks present a great opportunity for you dog to socialize with other dogs in a controlled environment. Since there are often times many different breeds found at a dog park at any one time, your dog will be able to mingle with those other breeds to experience first hand what they look like, smell like, and act like. Because the dog park is somewhat of a controlled environment, dog owners can usually quickly correct the situation if dogs become aggressive or do not get along well with others. Dogs parks promote good social skills, or at least the experience of being around other dogs, and will help your dog develop the awareness of others around him and hopefully learn to live peacefully with other dogs.

Another great way to help your dog become more social with others is to simply get another dog for your home. When you introduce another dog into your home, existing dogs will learn everything they can about the new visitor and will be curious about their look, smell, and behavior. Bringing another dog home will essentially give your current dog a new companion to keep company and play with during the times when you’re at work or away from the house for other reasons.

Finally, another opportunity for getting your dog social interaction with other dogs is by bringing them to a kennel or a dog day care. Your dog will have plenty of opportunity to socialize with other dogs while they are at a kennel or dog day care because they are often given plenty of time to run around and play outside during scheduled times. This promotes more social behavior on your dogs part and provides him with great experiences of being around other dogs.

There are a number of different opportunities for providing your dog with the experience of interacting with other dogs and all of the above mentioned opportunities are great ways to get your dog some much needed social interaction. It’s important to keep in mind that dog social skills are very important and should not be disregarded. Having good social skills is a key factor in your dogs behavior
and mentality and will help your dog live a more balanced and healthy life.

Be the Stubborn One When Training Your Dog to 'Come'

>> 11/12/09

Dogs aren't actually insubordinate. However, they usually don't understand precisely what they're supposed to do. To make this apparent to them, you need to appropriate the alpha status very quickly. Be sure to practice patience and resolute and firm force to produce the behavior wanted. This can be very challenging when teaching the command "come".

Dogs enjoy exploring their environment naturally by sniffing all around the area, digging, turning things around and running away with little objects. A training session is best done when you keep your dog away from other distracting voices and people. A clear yard without any little objects is the best idea for such a purpose.

The moment the dog comes spontaneously towards you, act quickly, and reinforce the command with a hand gesture. If he moves towards you, spontaneously, reinforce "Come" with the hand movement. Make sure that the gesture and/or the word is unique and not one which is used during regular training sessions.

To start, stand in front of the dog and get it in the sit position. Execute the "stay" command as you move back several steps. Use the vocal and hand signal command. Give the dog effusive praise for appropriate behavior, but don't give a reward for partial or improper behavior.

Keep repeating this, as you move back. If your dog comes towards you too quickly, use 'sit/stay' commands again. If the dog does not move try coaxing with treats or toys.

For dogs that are sluggish learners, or a little reluctant, leash and collar training may be necessary. Put your dog in the sit/stay position and begin to back up a short distance as you are playing out some excess on the leash. If your dog won't come to you, give a light tug that is pronounced while giving the vocal command along with the hand sign.

For a dog that comes too eagerly, use a long rope or strap and wrap it around a post or a tree. If the dog tries to lift off early tug the leash as you give the "stay" command. If there are no trees available, use someone to help with the session. The detrimental part about using another person during the session is the dog can become puzzled about who they should obey. It's always best if they just focus on one teacher.

While instructing, steadfastness and composure is critical. Dogs don't as a matter of course understand the usefulness of 'come' or any other commands. Speaking harshly when the dog commits errors or is a little stubborn is normally not useful. Develop your leader position with tone of voice, body posture and willingness to wait for the dog to comply. Physical correction or leading is a less helpful technique.

Dogs respond extremely quickly to praise when they execute proper behavior. You need to be resolute and make sure that they come when you order them to.

Why Is Rover Chewing Up The House. Tips To Make Him Stop

>> 11/11/09

A dog's normal behavior is chewing. Obviously, you can't allow this behavior. It is not acceptable to permit your dog to chew clothing, furniture, stuffed toys, shoes, or even the remote control. Dogs can even chew a hole in a house large enough for it to escape; an occurrence that once happened with the dog of a friend of mine. A computer mouse and numerous remote controls were also victims of chewing by the same dog. That crazy little guy.

Understanding why dogs chew is the first step. During the teething stage, puppies will often want to chew. A dog will put anything in its mouth to make the pain disappear, similar to what babies do during their teething stage. When dogs age into adults, their chewing habits are usually attributed to boredom or separation anxiety. Some dogs chew as part of their play ritual, and others chew just because the item tastes particularly good. Regardless, chewing behaviors from adult dogs are an undesirable trait.

Here is a list of some of the more destructive habits of dogs.

• Teething
• Mouthing
• Boredom
• Fear
• Play
• Attention Seeking
• Just tastes Good

All puppies go through the teething stage. For human children, there are topical gels available that parents can rub on the gums to alleviate pain and discomfort. This same type of topical gel has been used on puppies by a number of veterinarians. Teething is a natural stage of puppy development, and there are many products to assist the puppy during this time. There are manufacturers of hard rubber and plastic toys that are designed for puppies that are teething. A few at-home remedies for teething pups are as follows. Give your puppy ice cubes to chew on, or tie a damp wash cloth into a knot and freeze it. Give it to the puppy to chew on when he seems to be experiencing teething pain. Often. the frozen washcloth technique only works for small breed puppies. One idea, that avoids confusion as to what is his and what is yours, is to give a frozen bagel to the teething dog. This gives the dog something to gnaw on to aid the teething process, and is also a treat to encourage him to chew on it. I purchase the bags of smaller bagels. It is a very effective way to conquer teething problems.

Mouthing: It is the norm for little puppies (as young as 8 weeks old) to have really sharp baby teeth. These young dogs tend to bite during times of play and excitement. You know, those little teeth are sharp! The mouthing behavior needs to be discouraged. This is the style in which young dogs speak with each other. Some pet owners like to play rough with their puppies, and they often return with a small bite mark as a result. Do not encourage this type of behavior, but rather, teach your dog that it is unacceptable.

Boredom: If you are absent from your dog for extended period of time, it will become bored and look elsewhere for something to do. One way the dog can pass the time is by finding something to chew. Getting your dog more exercise will be beneficial for them, and you for that matter. Although walking some dogs relaxes them and tires them out, other dogs can be energized by the experience. If the latter is the case, a good solution is to take some down time with your dog immediately after a walk. This will create a strong bond between you and your dog, and strengthen your relationship. Once again, using frozen pizza dough or frozen bagels makes for a good chew toy for a puppy. If he is pooped after his walk, this doesn't give him much chew time.

Fear - Sometimes, when frightened, dogs may chew on items. Loud noises, like during thunderstorms, can frighten some dogs. Dogs also become agitated by the presence of other dogs, and if another dog walks past the window, your dog may start barking, chewing the window frames, and so on. These types of actions are a result of defensive behaviors. The "down stay" command, as covered in earlier dog articles, is one of the most effective techniques when dealing with these types of behaviors. If the dog is acting in a negative manner, put a positive spin on the situation before attempting to teach this command. Give the "down stay" command to the dog after first removing him from the window. Find a way to relax the dog as you sit with him. This allows the dog to achieve a calm state of mind.

Play- Additional training will usually end any biting or chewing that happens while your dog is playing. Energy levels vary between individual dogs, and as such, some dogs have higher amounts of energy than others. I have an 11 year old, tall skinny hound mix, that acts like he is a puppy. Running and jumping if he thinks he is going for a walk. It is so hilarious, nobody believes he is 11. This type of dog requires a significant amount of exercise to supplement the recommended training. Introduction of structured activities, such as jumping or fetch, will help the dog get necessary exercise during play time. During play time and exercises, practice many "down stays" in as many locations as possible.

Attention Seekers - Some dogs desire more attention from their owners than they are receiving, and strive to gain that attention through a behavior they know works. Common attention seeking behaviors include barking, chewing, spinning, stealing, and limping. As the dog is attempting to receive any sort of attention by chewing, negative reinforcement by the owner will not cause this behavior to stop. If no attention is brought to the poor behavior, it will often times go away on it's own.

Just Tastes Good - As common sense dictates, if an item tastes good to a dog, that dog is more likely to want to chew it. Items that are at risk of being chewed are ones that are palatable to a dog. This means that some items have a pleasant taste or texture to the dog. Examples of these items include stuffed animals, shoes, and most furniture. If your puppy is going through the inevitable chewing stage, it is wise not to leave these things laying around.

Usually puppies chew, but eventually grow out of it. Chewing as an adult dog is usually caused by one of the above issues. Usually if your dog is healthy, have space of their own to roam, and exercise often chewing won't be a problem. If it does become a problem, try the frozen bagels.

Dog Clicker Training Reinforces Positive Behavior

>> 11/8/09

Training dogs has many methods and one of these methods is called Dog Clicker Training. It is used to train dogs, but was first introduced to train dolphins. It allowed the use of a clicker or a clicking sound to communicate to the dolphins as they swam under the water. The clicker method was found to be useful for other animals as well, including puppies, fish, elephants and other animals.

A clicker is a simple metal gadget that creates a click sound that does not waver in volume or pitch. It is a quick single sound that animals are not afraid of and can respond to quickly. This type of training is one of the most humane ways to train a dog. It does not hurt the body of the dog or injure the dogs ears. Dog clicker training is used to associate the sound of the clicker with the desired behavior the trainer or owner seeks.

The idea of using a tool such as a clicker is to reward the dog or puppy with the quick sound of a click and a small treat when the dog obeys it's trainer. Many times in training a dog receiving a treat alone is not as successful. The reason for this is that once the dog has achieved it's goal, it quickly moves on to another activity and while the owner rewards the pet with a small treat the dog has already moved on to another activity. This proves to be confusing to the dog and training the dog takes longer and can frustrate both the dog and the owner. If the clicker is used to train the dog, the behavior is associated with the click immediately, and the dog associates the good behavior with the click, and not the delayed response of a treat.

The owner, or trainer will want to start with allowing the dog to get used to hearing the click and immediately receiving a small treat. Soon, the owner will want to allow the dog to do a small task, one that the dog already is doing or has already learned. An example of this is if the dog is on a walk, and the dog urinates outside as opposed to inside. Immediately after the dog uses the outside for its waste, the clicker is used and the dog receives a treat. This reinforces this behavior in a positive way.

Similarly, if the dog jumps up on the couch or people he would be held back from the clicker sound and the treat. If the dog calms down and waits to see what the trainer is going to do, he would be given a quick click as the calmness is rewarded with the click and treat.

As time continues in training, body language and voice commands can be used along side of dogs in clicker training. Together, they bring a strong message to the dog. It will help teach the dog quicker than just simple voice commands or treat commands.

Dog clicker training not only teaches the dog positive behavior and good habits, but can also teach a dog to reject bad habits such as chewing or barking. Dog clicker training is not just the responsibility of the owner to raise a puppy correctly but can add to the overall generation of the canine community. The dog will be a happier one.

Training tips for dogs

>> 11/6/09

There's nothing more enjoyable than a trained dog. They're a pleasure to own and you can take them anywhere and be confident that they'll behave nicely. It does take some effort, but you too can have a dog that you can be proud of.

Here are some guidelines on training your dog.

1. Start training from puppy hood. There's no reason to wait until your dog is a certain age to start training him. He's been learning from his mom and litter mates from a very young age, and he can continue to learn from the time you take him home.

2. It's a good idea to take your dog to training classes in the beginning. This is as much to teach you as it is to teach him. You can become familiar with how dogs learn, and the various training methods under the guidance of an expert instructor. To get the full benefit of a training class, you'll need to do some homework. Some aspects of dog training can be tricky to master and if you practice at home, you can then ask the instructor for help with problem areas.

3. Be consistent with your training. If you ask your dog to sit and he doesn't, don't reward him, because he'll learn that he doesn't really have to do what you ask. Only ever reward the behavior you want, which means he isn't rewarded until he sits. Dogs are thought to have the attention span of young children, so 3 ten minute sessions a day are more productive than one half hour block of training. In the early stages of his learning, train him in a quiet place that's free of distractions. As he learns, you can then take him to busier noisier places to reinforce his learning.

4. Avoid the use of punishment or harsh handling. If you punish your dog, you don't really know if he understands what the punishment is for. You may punish him for not dropping on command, and he may misinterpret the punishment as being for scratching himself. There's too much risk of mixed messages, and it's not worth it. Not only that, punishment will make your dog afraid of you, and damage your relationship. Have patience. Not all dogs learn at the same rate. If you get frustrated at your dog, walk away. Take a break from training and try again later when you're more relaxed.

5. There are many positive methods of training dogs, such as using food treats, or toys as rewards. One of my favorite methods is clicker training. It's a proven method of training and is based on the scientific principles that are used to train dolphins in marine parks. Using a clicker, you can specifically mark the behavior you want to reward, and make it easier for your dog to understand what you want him to do. You can even teach your dog to perform tricks using a clicker, which will be great fun for both of you.

Take the time to train your dog, and you'll find you enjoy his company so much more. It's a great relationship building activity for both of you.

Important Things You Need To Know About Puppies And The Dog Training Basics

>> 11/5/09

The excitement of choosing your dog is over. You are arriving home and the family is rushing out of the car and into the house with the new puppy. As you look at the cute little face you ask yourself one question. Am I ready for this?

What to Feed This New Puppy.

First things first. You will have to decide on what this little puppy is going to eat. You need to choose a high quality diet. You need to do a little research and make some decisions. Your first decision is what type of dog food you will choose.

1. Canned Dog Food
2. Dried Dog Food

Some people choose canned dog food because they feel it is more like real food. It retains about 70-80% of the water that is naturally in the vegetables and meat. This usually means that the puppy will drink less water. Be sure to supplement with some hard dog biscuits that are suitable for puppies which will help to keep their teeth clean.

Currently the most popular choice seems to be the dried dog food. Always choose the best quality food you can afford. You have to remember that if you were only going to eat one thing all your life it had better be good for you. Dried dog food is now a scientific blend of all the nutrients your dog will need but the better ones have less filler and the puppies need a lot of protein to grow.

For the first few days you might want to give the new puppy that same food that they were receiving at the kennel you bought them from. After that you can slowly start mixing in your new choice, using more each time until you have 100% of the new food. You may as well start with some dog training basics now by not leaving the food on the floor all day. Only put the food out when you decide and take it away after they have eaten. Do it often as they have to learn that food is only available when you decide.

Sleep Time Comes Fast.

Hopefully you have thought ahead enough to buy a crate. Get your puppy started sleeping in the crate from the first night and it will eventually treat it as a safe place to stay. Make sure that the bottom has a soft blanket for the puppy to curl up in. Unfortunately if you think that's the end of it for the night, you are wrong. As you try to sleep you will be constantly woken by the sad little cries of a puppy missing its mother and siblings. They are used to lots of warmth and noise so it might be a good idea to add a hot water bottle under the blanket and to leave a radio or TV on for a while. Some people even leave a loud ticking clock near the cage to simulate the heart beat of the mother.

Who Is Entertaining Whom?

You will soon realize that your puppy is not just entertaining but also needs to be entertained. You should have a selection of safe toys for them to play with such as:-

- Chew Ropes,
- Balls and Bones of Nylon
- Soft Toys

Make sure to be careful of the squeaky toys as the puppy could chew the toy and swallow the squeaker. This has often ended in surgery and even if it doesn't the squeaking will drive you insane as they catch on pretty quickly on how to bite in exactly the right spot. Only let them play with rubber balls if you are supervising as swallowed rubber can upset their stomachs.

Start With Dog Training Basics

A crate is useful training tool both for house training and puppy behavior in general. Treat it as you would a child's bedroom. It is a safe comfortable place to sleep but occasionally they will be sent there when naughty.

You should begin your dog training basics by putting your puppy in its crate any time you need to leave them unsupervised in the house, or at night. This gets them used to it and they will often go there on their own when they want to get away from people. They will cry at first but do not let them out right away. If you do they will quickly learn that all they have to do is whine and you will let them out.

There will come a time when you need to discipline your puppy. You should never hit your puppy or raise your voice. You can use the crate as a time-out place. This is useful if your puppy is play biting too much or if you have caught them chewing the furniture. Make sure that the punishment instantly follows the bad behavior or they will not know what they are in there for. Put them in quickly with a firm, No, and leave them in there for a few minutes. If you have to repeat it then increase the minutes until you get the action to stop. This one tool will give you some control and get you started on the dog training basics you will need.

Training Your Puppy - The First Steps

>> 11/4/09

Dog training can be both very enjoyable or very aggravating. What I try to focus on is the enjoyable part of training. If you know the basics and follow them, training your puppy will be an enjoyable experience for you and your puppy.

The first step in training should be to crate train your puppy. I have found that crate training has many benefits. The first benefit is that because of a puppy's natural instinct not to soil his living area, there shouldn't be any accidents in their crate. This will help tremendously in housebreaking. Just remember a puppy can only hold his bladder for so long, so don't keep him in there for more than a few hours at a time unless it is bedtime. It might take a little time for your puppy to get used to his crate.

Let him know it is a nice place to be not a punishment spot. Feed him a few meals in his crate with the door open. After about 1 week close the door while he eats, this should make the crate seem like a reward place for him. After a week with the door closed put his food bowl wherever you planned on feeding him. We have a boxer puppy that we did this with and now any time we grab a treat she runs right to her crate. Just make sure you get the right size crate for your puppy.

The next step should be house training. Always take your puppy out after eating, drinking or sleeping. Praise him and give him a treat when he does go outside. Watch for the signs that he's getting ready to go. One key sign is when he is sniffing and walking around in circles. This is telling you that he's trying to find his scent on where to go potty. If you see him doing this just grab him and take him outside to the spot you want him to go. Accidents are bound to happen, have patience but never punish your puppy for going inside. He won't understand why he's being punished, he'll just think going potty is what your punishing him for. Find a cleaner that gets rid of scents, you can find these at most pet supply stores. With patience your puppy will be trained in no time.

To me, crate training and house breaking are the two most important steps in training your puppy. After these you can work on sit, stay, heel and all the other commands. One other important factor in early training is finding a training class. I like a class that has 6-8 dogs in it. I have found that a smaller class has less distractions and because of that it will be easier to train your puppy. See if your trainer offers play groups. This is a great way for your puppy to learn valuable social skills with other dogs. Just remember to have patience but more importantly have fun.

Stop Dog Biting Practical Tips

>> 11/2/09

Dogs are the greatest pet friends one could ever have. They are adorable and loyal and they make good company. But if your dog bites, then you have got a big problem. Dog biting can be annoying, destructive, and even dangerous, especially for children in your household and your neighbors. It is therefore important to remember some pointers and tips on how to stop dog biting.

Prevention is better than cure, as they say, so it is best to control the bad behavior at a very early age. Biting is natural for puppies. It is how they play, explore their surroundings, and socialize with people. But if owners teach puppies not to bite aggressively early on, they can easily learn to break the habit and be well-behaved dogs when they grow up.

Another of the most effective methods on how to stop dog biting is to make available special toys for for dogs. Biting is a natural instinct to canines so you could not get rid of the habit entirely. However, what pet owners can do is to help their pets channel their urge to bite on things on the "proper" objects like toys. If your puppy starts biting, even if in a playful manner, express how it hurt you by saying "ouch." Say it in a high-pitched voice so the young dog could better remember . It would also help if you do not encourage games that involve biting, such as tug of war.

Do not resort to physical punishment if you are looking for effective ways on how to stop dog biting. The most important thing to remember when trying to teach your dog a lesson is to develop a relationship of mutual trust with your pet. Pet owners need to be firm and consistent without instilling a life-long sense of fear in the animals.

So if your dog or puppy bites, scold it verbally then ignore it for some minutes to show your displeasure. Doing this repeatedly each time your pet tries to bite will give them the idea that you will not allow the behavior. Ignoring your pet makes an impression on them because dogs naturally crave for attention. Share these methods on how to stop dog biting to all members of the family so that the dog will not get confused in his training. Tell your children never to allow puppies to bite their fingers.

If your dog is already an adult and you are interested to learn about ways on how to stop dog biting you can start by buying it a muzzle for safety the safety of other people. Additional training time and determination are necessary. Yell in a low and guttural voice when your dog tries to nip or bite you. Then chase it around, pretending like you are monster. Dogs do not handle fearful situations well . But most importantly, you can prevent the habit of biting in your pet by allowing it to undergo obedience training.

The Friendly And Easy To Train Brindle Boxer

Almost every household seems to have at least one dog as their pet. There could be a valid reason why people say that man’s best friend is a dog. No matter how stressed out you are after a hard day’s work, a dog can be like a stress reliever, wagging its tail and showing how eager they are to see you. If you are interested in getting a dog for your child or simply for the whole family, Boxer dogs can be a good option to look upon. Before you actually buy one, it is better to do some research on the dog. Brindle boxers are rather famous among many dog lovers, so we will focus more on them.

When talking about Boxer dogs in general, their colors vary from fawn, red, white to brindles. The color fawn comes with different tones of color ranging from light tan to yellow. In addition, their colors could also vary between a reddish tan and mahogany.

Brindle boxers are way ahead from their fellow boxers. These dogs are named brindle boxers because of their stripy appearance. Their black stripes usually come on a fawn background. Some brindle boxers come with the appearance that many people refer to as a ‘reverse brindle’. This means that instead of black stripes, they have fawn stripes on a black background.

Brindle boxers are very friendly and easy to train from an early age. If you are already an owner of several pets, these brindle boxers could be trained to interact with the other pets in a way where everyone can live peacefully and in a friendly manner. Families love them as they are known to be affectionate, playful as well as loyal.

The intelligence level of brindle boxers is quite high and therefore could be trained easily. They can sometimes act mischievously. If this happens, you could always use positive reinforcement as they tend to obey orders when done positively.

How to Clicker Train Your Dog

>> 11/1/09

Clicker Training is a slang term for the newly popular way of dog training has evolved over the last few years. This method has taken off recently due in great part to the efficiency in which the dog is able to interpret in an instant that they are performing the skill the way their handler wants them to. The animal will only learn from the instant it is in. Essentially, they do not have any way of knowing that you are praising them for something they just did less than a minute ago. With the invention of clicker training, the handler no longer has so cheer and say “good boy” in the instant the dog performed the skill (which at first comes by surprise). Instead, the handler has this clicker device in their hand and the instant he sees the skill being done right he clicks the clicker and the animal knows that what he is doing right then has pleased the handler. So how exactly does this work?

How does the Dog understand the Clicker?

When you typically train a dog, you use food and toys as methods of praise for the dog when he does what you want him to do. The dog tries to perform the skill that you are directing him to do and when you give him the treat he knows he did something right. Unfortunately because you give him the treat a little while later, he is not certain of exactly what it is that he did that deserved the treat. So while he is enjoying the treat, he is working harder to figure out what it is that he is doing that is making you happy.

While you cannot react fast enough to the dog’s actions to signal what they did right, the clicker can signify to the dog the instant he doesn’t the desired skill correctly. When you first introduce the clicker into the training, you will give the dog his usual award while you are clicking the clicker device. Hearing the noise while receiving his treat he will start to realize that the clicker has become a praise device. In time as the dog is performing a skill correctly, you can use the clicker to signal instants that he has succeeded his performance.

What is the Clicker?

The clicker is a simple plastic device with a metal insert that snaps back and forth as you push on the button. This action creates a sharp and loud clicking sound that can easily be heard by your dog. For example if you want your dog to sit on command and you push down on your dog’s bottom while saying sit, you will force him to sit. Once he is in the position you want him to be, you click the clicker and give him his primary treat. In time you can ask him to perform a series of skills and use the clicker to praise him for each skill he performs, saving the primary treat for the completion of the series.

When you are outside in public with your dog, try using the clicker along with your voice commands. As you are walking along the beach and your dog is wandering nearby, use your come command. When the dog returns to your side push the clicker a few times to let him know that he did a good thing by responding to your command. You can also use the clicker to attract your dog’s attention. If he wandered off and your voice command either can’t be heard or there is too much confusion going on for him to hear your call, try using the clicker. Depress the clicker buttons a few times to try to signal your dog’s attention. By using a sound that is different from the distractions around him, he will recognize he sound and start to look for the source of it. Once you have his attention again, try again to use your voice commands to get him to respond. When he reacts properly, use the clicker again as the praise tool.

As with any other training regiment, we ask that you never use anger or hitting to train a dog. Abused dogs will eventually attack. Use kindness to train your dog, it works better!
