Dog potty training is highly impossible if your dog is no longer a pup. The best time to potty train your dogs is when they are still pups because the older they get, the harder it gets for you to teach them anything so once you get that puppy, start dog potty training as early as possible. The first rule to remember is once your dog eat, you would only have to wait for 15 minutes before it makes that food into poop and that goes the same way with water -only this time it's pee. Training rule number 2 is for you and your pup to go out in your backyard early in the morning or as soon as the both of you are awake already. Do this after he finishes his first meal as well. Dogs, especially puppies, love taking naps. Be sure that when your puppy wakes up from his nap that you take him out for a walk in your backyard. If you love giving your pup lots of snacks, wait for 15 minutes for him to digest it and then go out for a walk with your dog again so he could do his pooping in the yard or wherever you want him to.

Rule number 3 is to cheer your puppy when he finally produces poop. Do this when he poops in the right place, your happy voice will let your dog know that you are happy in seeing him do this. Once your dog sees you are happy, he will do it over and over and over again.

Rule 4 -feed your puppy when you can wait 15 minutes and have enough time to take him outside. This goes with his water intake as well but if you give your dog proper potty training, you will not have any problems with how much he has to drink in a day.

If your dog is still not potty trained this becomes a big problem during summertime because dogs need to drink lots of water to keep their body at the right temperature. You can save cleaning time by having your dog learn how to tap on something or maybe ring a bell when he needs to pee. What needs to be done in this case is before you bring your dog to his peeing area, make him ring a bell. Do it every time you two go out so that he will make it into a routine. This will greatly help you get a tip off that your dog is about to go.

Rule number 5 will be a bit difficult for puppy and dog lovers but it has to be implemented. Once your dog had a poop accident i.e. pooping in a prohibited space, ignore your dog and clean up his mess as quietly as possible. Punishing or yelling your dog will not make him learn it will only confuse him. For some dogs, you yelling or being mad might be a bit amusing because hey, they cannot understand your language!

Realistic Methods For House Training A Puppy

Rewards are one way to teach your puppy. When he has finished using the bathroom praise him or give him a treat before he goes back into the house.

On average, puppies eat approximately three to four times per day. Feed your puppy at the same time to help develop a regular feeding schedule and bathroom schedule.

To keep your puppy from needing to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, put his dishes up about two hours before bedtime. If he does wake up in the middle of the night, stay calm, so he won't think it is time to play. Don't turn on a lot of lights or play with him. Take him outside and then go back to bed.

Supervise.

Keep an eye on your puppy when he is inside so he will not soil in the house.

When the puppy is not being trained or played with, have him on a six foot leash beside you. If he begins sniffing, barking, circling, scratching at the door or becomes restless, he may need to use the bathroom. Take him outside immediately if you notice this behavior. Use praise or treats to reward him when he is done using the bathroom.

Training Your Puppy - The First Steps

Dog training can be both very enjoyable or very aggravating. What I try to focus on is the enjoyable part of training. If you know the basics and follow them, training your puppy will be an enjoyable experience for you and your puppy.

The first step in training should be to crate train your puppy. I have found that crate training has many benefits. The first benefit is that because of a puppy's natural instinct not to soil his living area, there shouldn't be any accidents in their crate. This will help tremendously in housebreaking. Just remember a puppy can only hold his bladder for so long, so don't keep him in there for more than a few hours at a time unless it is bedtime. It might take a little time for your puppy to get used to his crate.

Let him know it is a nice place to be not a punishment spot. Feed him a few meals in his crate with the door open. After about 1 week close the door while he eats, this should make the crate seem like a reward place for him. After a week with the door closed put his food bowl wherever you planned on feeding him. We have a boxer puppy that we did this with and now any time we grab a treat she runs right to her crate. Just make sure you get the right size crate for your puppy.

The next step should be house training. Always take your puppy out after eating, drinking or sleeping. Praise him and give him a treat when he does go outside. Watch for the signs that he's getting ready to go. One key sign is when he is sniffing and walking around in circles. This is telling you that he's trying to find his scent on where to go potty. If you see him doing this just grab him and take him outside to the spot you want him to go. Accidents are bound to happen, have patience but never punish your puppy for going inside. He won't understand why he's being punished, he'll just think going potty is what your punishing him for. Find a cleaner that gets rid of scents, you can find these at most pet supply stores. With patience your puppy will be trained in no time.

To me, crate training and house breaking are the two most important steps in training your puppy. After these you can work on sit, stay, heel and all the other commands. One other important factor in early training is finding a training class. I like a class that has 6-8 dogs in it. I have found that a smaller class has less distractions and because of that it will be easier to train your puppy. See if your trainer offers play groups. This is a great way for your puppy to learn valuable social skills with other dogs. Just remember to have patience but more importantly have fun.

Some Basics For Housetraining Your Puppy

When your pup is indoors, watch him. Don't allow him to roam freely throughout your house. That is an invitation for him to leave a hidden "surprise" for you. Instead, confine him to a certain area and pay attention to signs that he needs to eliminate. When you notice those signs, take him to his designated elimination spot and praise him for his success.

As noted, your puppy will have a few accidents. Don't punish him. If you catch him making a mess inside, interrupt him without scaring him (avoid yelling or chasing him). Take him to his designated area so he can finish. Then, praise him for it. Too many owners are quick to punish their puppies for having an accident. The result is that a pup learns to fear his owner.

Housetraining a puppy requires patience and diligence. However, if you approach it in the right manner, your pup will not only learn to control himself, he'll learn to trust you in the process.

The 5 Most Important Things to Teach Your Puppy in Their First Year

If you've decided you're ready to get a dog or if you already have a new puppy and you feel like things are quickly getting out of control, it's not too late. There are a few things you can teach your dog that will make your life easier and will make them a better pet. This article will show you the top five things that you should teach your puppy during the first year. If you do this, your dog will be not only a pet, he'll be a companion and a friend.

Potty Training

With a new puppy, the easiest way to teach toilet training is through the use of a crate. Obviously you'll need to take the puppy outside during the day, but while in a crate a puppy will not go to the bathroom unless you fail to hold up your end of the deal and take them outside periodically (once in the middle of the night is fine for a young puppy).

Get in the habit of asking your dog if they need to go outside, "need to go out?" This will help them associate the question with the action. As they get older, when you ask the question you can watch their behavior and see if they need to.

Once you're outside, you can even teach a command to tell them to do their business. In fact, I use "do your business" for #1 and "hurry up" for #2. Again, if you start saying your phrase of choice when they start going, very soon they will "go" on command. This is very useful when the weather is unpleasant and the dog really doesn't want to be outside. It's equally important when the dog would rather roam and sniff than take care of business.

Sit, Down, Stay

"Sit" is the easiest of these three commands and should be taught first. Even a young puppy can learn this. "Down" is a submissive position and can be difficult for some dogs. Never punish a dog after putting them in "down" or it can lead to trust issues. "Stay" is more of an advanced command and should be taught after your puppy is six months old. Before that their attention span is too short.

Come

I prefer the "here" command for this. In my opinion this is the most important command to teach your dog for their safety. Fortunately it's very easy. Every time you're outside with your puppy (ideally in an enclosed area or even better on a long lead), have some treats in your pocket. My favorite is dried bits of cut up hot dog in a ziplock. Issue the command and gently draw the puppy in with the lead. Give the treat and lots of praise when they reach you.

Very soon your puppy will come running as fast as possible when you say "here." Eventually you can slowly replace the treats with praise, but always give your dog praise when they quickly return. One warning: never punish your dog after calling them with this command. They should always be enthusiastic when they return to you, and punishment can harm this attitude.

Leash

It's nice to be able to train your dog to walk beside you with a leash, however I recommend waiting for serious leash training until the puppy is six months old. Dogs tend to want to pull and go where they want to go. It's your job to teach your puppy that a leash walk is an interactive thing between the two of you. They should be at your side, paying attention to you and where you're going.

Eventually you might even be able to walk you dog without a leash and have them stay at your side as if they were on a leash. If you have difficulty with this training, a basic obedience class can be a huge help.

Off

Some dog owners confuse their puppies by using the same command when they want their dogs to lie down or get off of the furniture or stop jumping on people. I prefer the "off" command for the latter.

With wild dogs, the leader of the den always chooses the highest, most comfortable, and most defensible position. In the home, this is the sofa and bed. When dogs jump on furniture, it is an act of dominance. They are subtly challenging your authority. Let them "win" often enough in these small challenges and they won't listen to you like they should.

If your dog jumps on furniture, give them the "off" command while pushing them away from the furniture. You can and should also use the same command when they try to jump on people (another dominant act). This command is very quickly learned because it's natural for the leader (you) to keep them out of their favorite places.

There are many other things you can and should teach your dog. They are eager to learn if you'll put forth a little bit of effort. These lessons are also a great way to reinforce with your puppy that you're the one in charge. To us this position might seem a little mean, but it's a natural thing for dogs - they need a leader or they will become one. Work on training your dog a few simple things and they will be a great companion and friend.

Housebreaking Your Dog in 14 Days

Housebreaking your dog is seemingly the first test of your patience as a dog owner.

Perhaps you're experiencing the following scenario:

You take him outside multiple times a day and every time, he refuses to make. You assume he just doesn't have to go, so you bring him back inside and moments later he soils the rug.

Or...

You take him outside and he goes, you praise him with "Good boy" and after bringing him back in, moments later he goes again.

It's a frustrating cycle not only for you, but for your dog as well. You just can't seem to make him understand what he's supposed to do.

Your dog simply doesn't understand the rules yet. That's why it's important to take your dog outside to make at scheduled times of the day.

It will take approximately 14 consecutive days of going outside, watching your dog make and praising him for it before he starts to get it. Housebreaking a dog takes discipline, consistency and patience.

During that period, every accident that happens in the house is counted as negative two days. Remember, you'll want 14 consecutive days of proper housebroken behavior before you can relax a bit.

After he goes outside, you'll want to supervise him closely for the next ten minutes he is inside the house. At the first sign of going the the bathroom, take him outside.

If he does have an accident, only use the "No" command if you catch him in the act. Otherwise, it's useless and will only confuse your dog.

The amount of time that you should take your dog outside to make will vary depending on the breed, size and type of puppy.

It's generally recommended that you take your dog out every 2-3 hours during the day for the first three weeks. Obviously you won't be taking your puppy out every 2-3 hours at night before bed. So use the following strategy.

Take away your dog's water bowl two hours before bed. During that window of time, walk your dog at least twice. If accidents occur in the middle of the night, you may need to get up once in the night to walk your puppy.

As your dog gets older, his bladder size will increase and the nightly accidents will disappear.

After the first month, begin to space out the amount of time you take your dog outside to make. You'll want to do this until your dog only needs to go out only 3-4 times a day.

In summary, the trick to all of this is using the following tactics.

• Set a schedule to take your dog outside

• Praise your dog with the "Good boy" command when he makes

• In case of an accident, only use the "No" command if you catch your dog in the act

• Take away your dog's water two hours before bedtime

• Walk your puppy twice before bed

• Always supervise your dog when he is inside AFTER making outside

Now, just before you head out to work, take it outside for a very quick bathroom break, just a few minutes to relieve itself. Take it back inside, and head off to work. Please check to make sure your dog has a full bowl of clean water before you go.

You are probably already guessing it this time, and I am sure you are right. You get home, you take your dog out for a quick pee. And after you make your supper, feed your dog its meal. This is the best time to feed your dog the amount of food it is supposed to have. After your meal, you play around with it for awhile, and then take it for its walk. You dog just ate, and playing will allow the food to move quicker through its digestive system. Once you get outside, it is going to want to go potty in no time.

Now do you understand why this is such a simple trick? It is all because you fed it when you had time to take it out. You didn't starve it, you had given it a treat, and a very small amount of food in the morning. But it got its real meal when you ate your supper, this gives you time to take it for a full blown walk so it can do its business without being rushed. This is why the simplest trick you can do, is to have the right meal time.

Before you know it, your dog will get accustomed to using the paper. Once they do, move it to various areas in the house to train your dog to find the paper and use it regardless of the location. When they use the paper properly on a consistent basis, reward them for their excellent learning abilities and behavior. This is the first phase of the successful completion of your dog's training. Do you see how easy house training a dog can be?

Now, how do you get them to stop using the papers and go outdoors instead? Well, start a new process by gathering up all of the unused papers on the floor. Then position these papers by your entryways to the backyard.

At this time, the dog is trained to use the paper. When he uses the paper as you have done such a good job training him to do, put their nose near it and point to the door. Then open the door and let him run out and play. By consistently repeating this process, your dog will soon catch on and will begin scratching the door when it is time to go potty.
