Tips For Increasing Dog Social Interaction

>> 11/17/09

Dogs are similar to humans in that they need to socialize in order to learn the skills that they need to live peacefully with others. When you only have one dog as your pet it is sometimes hard to help them develop those skills if they never have the opportunity to do so. There are a number of ways that you can help your dog get the social skills he or she needs in order to live peacefully with other dogs and people.

Dog parks present a great opportunity for you dog to socialize with other dogs in a controlled environment. Since there are often times many different breeds found at a dog park at any one time, your dog will be able to mingle with those other breeds to experience first hand what they look like, smell like, and act like. Because the dog park is somewhat of a controlled environment, dog owners can usually quickly correct the situation if dogs become aggressive or do not get along well with others. Dogs parks promote good social skills, or at least the experience of being around other dogs, and will help your dog develop the awareness of others around him and hopefully learn to live peacefully with other dogs.

Another great way to help your dog become more social with others is to simply get another dog for your home. When you introduce another dog into your home, existing dogs will learn everything they can about the new visitor and will be curious about their look, smell, and behavior. Bringing another dog home will essentially give your current dog a new companion to keep company and play with during the times when you’re at work or away from the house for other reasons.

Finally, another opportunity for getting your dog social interaction with other dogs is by bringing them to a kennel or a dog day care. Your dog will have plenty of opportunity to socialize with other dogs while they are at a kennel or dog day care because they are often given plenty of time to run around and play outside during scheduled times. This promotes more social behavior on your dogs part and provides him with great experiences of being around other dogs.

There are a number of different opportunities for providing your dog with the experience of interacting with other dogs and all of the above mentioned opportunities are great ways to get your dog some much needed social interaction. It’s important to keep in mind that dog social skills are very important and should not be disregarded. Having good social skills is a key factor in your dogs behavior
and mentality and will help your dog live a more balanced and healthy life.
