Lhasa Apso Potty Training. Need Some Assistance?

>> 6/28/09

As you know, one of the most exciting things that most dog lovers can imagine is bringing home a lhasa apso for the first time.

Unfortunately, this excitement often wears off quickly when the new little addition to the family begins using the house as a bathroom area. Potty Training, fortunately, with a bit of consideration and understanding of some of the basic principles of potty training a Lhasa Apso, it is easy and simple to teach your Lhasa Apso this very important behavior.

There are some points to keep in mind when planning or starting your potty training routine. No matter which method you decide to use, there will be accidents. Plan for them, accept them and move on with as little fuss and negative actions or punishment towards the puppy as possible.

Usually with any puppies, accidents are due to very small bladders and bowels and poor control as their bodies develop, very similar to young human infants in fact.

Avoid Punishing Your Lhasa Apso

Avoid punishing or reprimanding your puppy for an accident, as it is likely to be more a fault of the owner for not taking the puppy to the potty area soon enough. Learn from mistakes and keep notes on when the puppy has accidents.

Try to see if there is a pattern developing that can assist you in the training, rather than become frustrated with the Lhasa Apso. Virtually every puppy wants to make his or her owner happy, and this can be used as an effective motivator in potty training even young puppies.

The Older Dog

Older Lhasa Apsos that are being housebroken or potty trained for the first time will also have accidents, until they understand what you want. Again, patience and a positive attitude will help the training process.

Remember that dogs aren't aware of the value of antique rugs or wall-to-wall carpeting, rather they tend to relieve themselves where they feel they should - usually somewhere out of the way, like behind the couch or in the corner behind the potted palm.

Is There Anything I Can Do To Help?

YES, There are many things that pet owners can do to make potty training easy for their new dog or puppy.

Good planning, an understanding of the potty training method to be used, plus other factors such as high quality food, lots of exercise, attention and love can all have a bearing on the time that it takes to potty train your Lhasa Apso.

Finally, each dog is somewhat different in personality and temperament. Some puppies and dogs seem to almost potty train themselves where others, even from the same litter, may require additional training but will soon learn what is expected.

What method Should I Use To Potty Training My Lhasa Apso?

Well, there are several different potty training methods that can be used for a Lhasa Apso.

Deciding on the best potty training method is important and depends a lot on the age of the dog, the time that you have to interact with the dog or puppy, your living area, and what method you are most comfortable with.

Some of the potty training methods encourage your Lhasa Apso to use an outside area to relieve themselves, whereas others focus on containing the area the puppy or dog uses inside of the house - by the use of litter boxes, potty training pads or even newspapers.

Here, we will cover one popular method, Crate Training.

CRATE TRAINING

Crate training is one of the most effective ways to potty train a Lhasa Apso as it uses the natural "denning instinct" of the dog to encourage it to keep the area that it sleeps clean and free from waste materials.

In the wild, the den is kept clean by the mother while the puppies are young. Once they get older and are able to walk, they naturally go outside of the living area or den to relieve themselves.

In houses there are no dens, and the area is simply too large for puppies to feel that this is "their spot".

By providing a den, in the form of a crate, the puppy will learn to wait until he or she is taken outside before soiling in the crate.

Crate training does required active participation and monitoring on the part of the dog owner.

The following is a brief outline of how to complete a crate training routine:

* Purchase an appropriately sized crate, either plastic or wire, that is large enough for your Lhasa Apso to stand and stretch out comfortably.

* Make sure the crate is comfortable - use soft, washable liners or dog blankets.

* Sit with your Lhasa Apso at the door of the crate. Place a small treat inside the crate. Praise the puppy for going into the crate and getting the treat. Let the puppy come out when he or she wants, do not close the door at this time.

* Only praise for going in the crate, ignore the puppy when he or she is coming out.

* When your Lhasa Apso walks into the crate say "Crate" or "Den" or whatever word you wish to associate with going into the crate.

* When your Lhasa Apso is staying in the crate on their own to eat the treats, close the door for a few seconds, then open it up. Only praise when the dog goes in and never when it is exiting. Soon the dog realizes in is good, out is neutral.

* After the puppy or dog is fine with being in the crate for more than a few minutes, put a chew toy in with the dog to keep it occupied. Try very slowly and gradually increasing your distance away from the crate, and the time in the crate with the door closed.

* Since the puppy or dog will generally not eliminate when they are in the crate because it is their den, take them outside to eliminate when they come out of the crate.

* After feeding, crate the puppy with a chew toy. In about 10-15 minutes take the puppy out of the crate and to the designated toilet area. Do not play or interact with the puppy at this time, simply take them to the spot.

* If the puppy relieves itself, praise the puppy and spend some time interacting. If, after about 3-5 minutes the puppy has not toileted, return it to the crate, again without saying anything, for an additional five minutes. Repeat the process without interacting with the puppy until it goes to the bathroom. Praise and play always follow toileting while crate training.

* At night, keep the crate in the bedroom or somewhere that you can easily hear the puppy. If he or she whines, take them to the toilet area and return them to the crate with as little interaction as possible. Just a simple "good girl" or boy will do when they toilet.

Too much praise will be seen as play, and may encourage the puppy to whine throughout the night. Remember though, the crate is only to be used until Potty Training is under control, not forever!

What Are Some Advantages of Using A Crate?

The advantages to crate training include the fact that it uses the puppies or dogs natural instincts to help with the learning process. It minimizes the dangers of messes and accidents around the house when done correctly. In addition the puppy feels secure, and they can understand what is required in a relatively short time.

What Are Some Disadvantages of Using A Crate?

Disadvantages to crate training for lhasa apso dogs are few, but the biggest one is that it will only work if the trainer monitors the puppy closely while in the crate, and follows the attention/inattention guidelines.

Some owners may think that crate training is cruel, but this is simply not the case. Once people understand the crate is not used as a punishment but as a safe and secure place for the puppy, they change their opinion quickly.

Crucial Training Techniques For Dogs

>> 6/26/09

Dogs have long been identified as "man's best friend. They do make excellent companions and superb family pets. But to be a respectable doggy resident and a noble family pet they need to be well trained.

You ought to set off training your puppy for obedience as soon as he arrives at your house. The training will be ongoing until he is about a year old and then while he may be considered "fully trained", you will still need to work with him to keep his skills razor-sharp for the remainder of his years. A well-trained dog is a pleasure to own and a delight to be around.

The number one rule of dog training is that you must be the "alpha dog". Some people may not like that term but the truth is that dogs are pack animals and they expect to have a leader. You must be the leader and all of the human being members of your family must outrank your dog in the pack order. Dogs will do everything for the leader of the pack so that must be you.

Never let your dog to demonstrate domination. He must wait for his food until you are done eating. This is a subtle but necessary thing. You must also never let him jump on you or other people either.

Never let your puppy do things that would not be suitable for an adult dog. This includes jumping and nipping at you and other persons. You must be consistent when you train a dog because they cannot deduce like a human being. A dog will not realize that it is tolerable to jump on you in your play clothes but not when you are sporting a business suit. Consistency is vital in dog training.

A crate will make all of your training easier. Dogs in reality want a comfortable and cozy place that is their own and they feel safe and secure in a crate. At the beginning your puppy may whine but you will need to just leave him there and he will adjust. A crate will make housetraining and obedience training both much easier.

Your dog's safety is dependent upon him being able to recognize and abide by the commands of "sit" and "stay". There will be times that you will need to control your dog in order to avoid the problems of running off or jumping on the people that visit your house.

You will most likely also want to train your dog to walk on a leash and to heal and after the basics you can move on to the entertaining things like fetching. Well-trained dogs make the best pets so be a responsible pet owner and teach your dog well.

Tips To A Successful Dog Training

To transform a puppy into an obedient dog that your whole family will appreciate is by using proper dog training techniques. Dogs, like kids, need to know and understand the rules of the house and will need to respect their owners.

When owners fall in love with their pups cute little face, they tend to forget that if no proper training is given, these little dogs will chew up the furniture they have at home and make a lot of mess on the carpet. A lot of puppies find their own share of trouble, and it is the owners responsibility to use his time to make sure that his up grows up to be a well behaved dog and will give joy to the whole family. Here you will find some tips on dog training.

Making The Rules

First thing that you need to do in training dogs is making the house rules. The sooner you start, the more successful your training is going to be. This just means that if you wont let your seventy pound hop on your bed at night, your ten pound puppy should not be an exception, not even once.

You can never say that it is too early to train your pup to not go near your furniture or not jump on your guests. Before taking your pup home, help your family understand and make them prepared to enforce the rules that you want your dog to follow and obey.

Being Consistent

Once the rules have been set, it will be up to you to maintain consistency in enforcing them. Every time your puppy breaks a house rule, he should be reprimanded with a sharp "No!" and shown the proper behavior.

This goes to all aspects of dog training which would include house breaking and shoe chewing instead of him chewing on his toy. Like children, dogs learn the rules fastest when they are imposed without failure. The problem that an owner would encounter is the time and the patience spent on being consistent. However, being consistent in dog training will not only save your time and effort but your shoes as well.

Offering Positive Rewards

When Scruffy does follow the rules appropriately, it is important to reward him for his good behavior. Effective dog training will use positive reinforcement much more often than punishment to produce desired results. At the beginning of the process, rewards might include an edible treat. As your pup gets the hang of the dog training process, rewards can move to praise and positive attention when your dog obeys your commands. When you provide positive reinforcement on a consistent basis, your puppy will soon learn that it is to his benefit to listen and obey your instruction.

Dog training is not complicated. But for you to have a positive result, you will need to exert patience, time and consistency in the process. Always remember though that after all the effort and time, everything will be worth it especially when you see your family enjoying the company of your dog.

Easy Ways to Deal with Inappropriate Elimination in Dogs

>> 6/24/09

A very common problem that dog owners are experiencing with their beloved pets is inappropriate elimination. Usually the main reason that there are so many dogs in the animal shelter is because of urination and defecation problems that their dogs experience.

In order to address inappropriate elimination you'll first need to know the underlying reasons that are causing the problem. A range of reasons exist for why dogs lose control of their bladders - if you take the time to unearth the main reason for your dogs problem you can then work towards fixing it.

Excitement is one of the most frequent problems that leads to inappropriate elimination. Dogs that are both young and old can easily fall into the trap of peeing while excited. Puppies may at times urinate when playing and not even realise they have done it (because they are so excited).

Make sure you don't punish your puppy if he urinates when excited. Given that he may not even know he has urinated will cause confusion for him and only make the problem worse. As your dog gets older he will start to develop better bladder control and in most cases the problem will fix itself.

In order to stop your dog from experiencing excitement elimination, you will need to prevent him from becoming excited. In doing this you must find milder forms of play and taking him away from the situation when play or activities get out of hand. This should curb instances of inappropriate elimination.

The next problem is called submissive urination, where the dog feels he must submit to the stronger leader by urinating and showing himself as the weaker pack member. In this case the owner becomes the pack leader and the dog is showing that he is the weaker member.

Submissive urination is in many cases due to mistreatment of the dog at some stage in its life - most likely via physical abuse. Its actually not a problem that your dog is submissive, only in the way he's displaying it. Try to teach your dog other ways to show his submissiveness. One example is to get your dog to lick your hand - this is a common way dogs demonstrate that they see you as the alpha dog.

If you want to quickly solve your dogs submissive urination problem you can do it quite easily by simply ignoring the problem. This works well because your dog begins to think there is nothing wrong and will gain confidence.

Inappropriate elimination is a serious problem and not always easy to solve. If you are willing to be persistent and stick at your training regime you will get results. In the case that you don't get good results, take your dog to a vet or consider using a professional dog training guide.

Best Puppy Training Secrets

>> 6/22/09

Dogs are the most preferred pets by majority of the population ever since the beginning of history. They have proven themselves to be efficient, loyal, highly intellectual and trainable in various tasks. They can be sweet and meek to their owners but ferocious to total strangers. This makes them a perfect companion for those who are single and unattached as well as to couples who are just planning to start their own families. People from all ages can also quickly adapt to the presence of an adorable canine.

Studies show that a dog's behavior as an adult is a result of his breeding and training. Because you can't do anything anymore about a dog's breed since it is an inherent part of his personality, you just have to make sure that he was trained well in his younger days so that you won't be experiencing any attitude problems when he is already a full grown adult. This is a big consideration to mull over when you want to get another puppy in the future. Here is a list of puppy training secrets that you must know in order to have a well-mannered pet in the future.

Before anything else, you must first establish a good rapport with your pet. Do not immediately start ordering difficult tricks that will make him want to scamper away with his tail between his legs. Set the mood first by playing with him, cuddling him and stroking his tummy. When he seems to be well rested and relaxed, you can start the drill by taking away his freedom. This might sound harsh but you have no choice if you want to impose discipline in his life.

There are a lot of ways to do this but the most common includes putting a leash around his neck, placing him inside a kennel or positioning him in a crate. It is expected that your dog would howl in protest. At times, it may be too annoying that you would want to stuff his mouth with a ball of socks. However, remember that all this seemingly vicious acts will gain benefits. Try to be immune to this kind of suffering. Remember, you only want what's best for your dog. The end justifies the means, as they often say.

Second, teach him a simple trick followed by a treat. The treat could come in the form of a small chewable bone or a piece meat. Just like the classic conditioning method by renowned psychologist Ivan Pavlov, they will learn to associate the new trick with food. This will stroke their interest and whet their appetite for more food.

Third, you can go the opposite way of the second step and let your dog learn through the negative conditioning process. Instead of giving a nice reward, teach him the power of the words no, stop and don't in a strong and authoritative tone. They will distinguish that it is something significant in relation to your voice.

Fourth, you have to be unswerving in your reward or punishment. When you either of the two, make sure that it is appropriate to the excellent job or the awful deed. Variety should be avoided at all cost or else your dog will develop some kind of a crisis. The same premise applies to all the people in your household.

Lastly, give plenty of alternatives. If there are chores that your dog can't easily do as told, like not peeing on the plant, then provide another option like giving him a pee box. This will shift his attention and result to a more favorable attitude. Don't be such a strict disciplinarian all the time that you will take the fun out of this training exercise. Have fun with your pet dog.

The Wonders Of Dog Leash Training

>> 6/21/09

Having the power to baby a puppy you just took home because its so tiny and adorable can be very tempting. But you have to remember that by doing so, this may lead to an untrained pup and a spoiled dog that will have a lot of different behavior problems in the long run. If this is the case, it will be hard to retrain a dog if hes already aged and is used to certain patterns already.

Dog leash training is one of these issues. Training a dog to a leash is much easier when the dog is a puppy, and is therefore small and easy to handle. When a dog is older, it is much more difficult to train it to the leash since it is physically much more able to pull the owner around and cause problems.

Instructions

First let the puppy get used to wearing a dog collar. First thing that a puppy would do after being introduced to a collar is scratch it, roll around, and use a lot of different means just to remove it off his neck.

It is going to be complicated to watch this whole procedure but you have to control yourself and remember that you are not to remove the collar until the time that the puppy has relaxed and becomes preoccupied with something else. This way, he would realize that no matter what behavior he shows he can not have the collar removed and that his collar can come on or off any time.

The next step in dog leash training is to do the same sort of process with the leash. The leash should be attached to the puppy's collar and the puppy should be able to drag it around with him while he is playing.

In time, he will not notice the leash as he did with the collar. This is when the owner can move to the next step. Just remember not to leave the leash around the puppy's neck without you watching him as this could be dangerous.

The final step is for the owner to train the dog to be comfortable having someone hold the end of his leash. The owner will need to walk around the house while holding the dogs leash. The leash should stay loose between the owner and the puppy so the dog is always by the owners area. If the dog tries to pull his owner, the owner must stop walking and call the dog so the god will be on the owners side again.

As soon as this happens, it would be safe for the owner to start walking again just as long as the puppy stays at the said where the lash is hanging freely. The puppy must be commended from time to time if he is doing well so that he knows that it is pleasurable walking that way.

Shih Tzu Training Made Easy

>> 6/19/09

One problem with training a shih tzu is that they will always beg for food while you are eating. To solve this problem simply sit them in their own area, away from the table, until you are finished eating. This will take several attempts, but eventually your shih tzu will take the hint and do it on their own. Remember to reward your shih tzu by giving them a treat afterward or their own delicious meal.

Body language plays a major part in how your shih tzu will react to your commands. Using body language properly will allow you to train your shih tzu a lot quicker. It also will help stop negative behavior in its tracks.

If your shih tzu's behavior ever upsets you the worse thing you can do is chase them. They think that you are playing and will continue to run. Also, they will not understand when you scold them because they thought you where playing a game with them.

When it comes time to give commands to your shih tzu take note of your posture. You should stand almost like a marine with your chest out and head back. Also, speak in a firm voice. This will let your shih tzu know that you mean business and the shih tzu will have more respect and also be slightly intimidated. This will help in the training process.

Shih tzu's tend to get wound up like a top easily and your reaction to that will determine whether or not this behavior worsens or improves. If this occurs make sure you act the opposite by moving slowly and using the same behavior that you want them to display. This will relax the shih tzu and start to change their behavior almost immediately.

Retrieval training is also a fun task to take on. The best way to take care of this first step is to use little bits and pieces of dog food or dog snacks. Take out the food and just sprinkle two or three treats on the ground. Do not let your Shih Tzu dog run to eat the food too fast. In fact, you should first train him or her to sit and stay until released, and then you point to the ground and say "pickup", "pickup".

Now repeat the process and every time you drop a piece of food simply use the same command to "pickup" and your shih tzu will quickly associate that with putting something in their mouth. This training usually doesn't take long at all especially when using things your shih tzu loves to eat. Try doing it when they are hungry to speed up the process.

When your shih tzu is less than one year old make sure you confine them to one room in your living quarters. You might even want to use some child safety equipment until you are comfortable that they will not get into any trouble while you are away.

Puppy Training For The Novice Puppy Owner

>> 6/18/09

The most vital fact about puppies and dogs that owners must realize is that dogs are pack animals and the person must set up dominance. You, the owner, are the "pack leader" and you must behave the part.

Intuitively a new puppy will spend a enormous sum of time trying to create their place in the hierarchy of their new-found home. They usually try to do this by trying to start their own power. Some breeds such as terriers have more dominant personalities while other breeds tend to be more naturally docile.

As soon as your puppy comes home you need to help him find his place in the hierarchy. All of the human members of the family are above him in the "pecking order" and he needs to be aware of that fact. This is not reprimand at all and dogs actually prefer to be compliant to their owners. If your dog is to become content and dutiful member of your household this hierarchy must be recognized.

In order to begin the domination you must abide by a few easy rules. If not your puppy will be receiving mixed signals and it will be more challenging for you to train him and he will be baffled as to what you really want.

One of the leading rules you must follow is that the leader always eats first. Do not let you puppy have a meal before you eat. If you and your family are planning to eat at about the same time you want to give food to your puppy, you should make the puppy wait. If not you can arrange for your puppy to eat at a whole separate time as you. At the beginning it may be of use for your training to make the puppy come to you and wait for his food until you are ready to give it to him. You may want to train him to sit before you put the bowl of food down.

Touching and handling a dog provide solid signals to him about who is in charge. Your puppy may complain and wail or even act as if that you hurt him at the beginning when you handle him for fundamental grooming rituals. If he does this you must absolutely ignore him and persist on finishing. You must always follow through with what you start with a puppy because he will ascertain quickly when you really mean something and if you are wishy-washy he will get another bewildering sign.

Most puppies use their mouths to nip and bite at things when they are very young. This behavior must be stopped at once. Give him a abrupt reaction of "No" and a tap if necessary. The pack leader never gets nipped and you are the pack leader.

It is vital with a new puppy to show him that you are assertive so try to avoid games like "tug'o'war" where he can get insistent and show too much power. Make sure that you reward his good behavior with praise and treats but just disregard his bad behavior as you begin obedience training. Keep these straightforward rules in mind and you can quickly teach your puppy to be a well-behaved and subservient dog.

Teaching Your Puppy To Be A Dependable Dog Today

>> 6/17/09

Puppies and dogs are natural pack animals and most of their actions reflects that fact. The most crucial thing to do when you get a new puppy is to confirm your control. You are the "pack leader" and you must always make sure that your puppy knows that.

Puppies will use up a major amount of time trying to figure out where they fit into the pecking order. They usually do this by trying to create their own authority. Some breeds are more dominant than others, for instance, the terrier breeds. Some of the other breeds tend to be more obedient naturally.

As soon as your puppy comes home he needs to have his place in the hierarchy recognized. He needs to know that he must be obedient to you and that you and the other human family members are the principal members of the pack. All of the humans inside the home must be higher than him in the pecking order. This is not a matter of punishment but rather the way it must be in order for him to be contented and to become a responsible doggy citizen.

There are a few straightforward rules that you must follow to establish this authority. If not your puppy will be receiving mixed signals and it will make training much more tough as he will be mystified as to what you really want and who the domineering member is.

The leader of the pack always eats first. Never let your puppy eat before you eat or at least don't ever let him see you eat after he does. Make him wait until after you and your family eat if you were planning on eating about the same time or just eat at completely different times. At first you may want to call your puppy to the food and make him wait for you to put it down. You can teach him to sit and then put the bowl down.

Day by day grooming of your puppy sends him solid signals about who is governing. Your puppy may howl or even act like you have hurt him at the beginning when you handle him for essential grooming. You must just pay no attention to him and follow through with what you are doing. Always follow through with whatever you begin with a puppy because they quickly learn when if you really mean something or not and if you are not following through your training will be arduous.

Most puppies will nip and bite at things when they are very young. You must stop this behavior right away and let your puppy know that it is not suitable with a distinct reaction of a "No" and a tap if needed. Bear in mind that you are the pack leader and the pack leader does not ever get nipped.

The most crucial thing with a puppy is to show him that you are the dominant leader of the pack so be prudent of games such as "tug'o'war' where he could demonstrate some dominance. You must praise his good behavior with words and treats and take no notice of his poor behavior as you start on obedience training. If you follow these simple tips you will have a well-behaved doggie resident.

Trying To Stop Dog Chasing? What You Can Do

>> 6/16/09

There are many different problems that dog owners have to address with their dogs. Some of these involve barking problems, digging problems and even jumping up on people.

There is no best way to solve these issues except to prevent them before they even happen. In order to accomplish that, start training your dog when he is still a puppy. You want them to be obedient and exhibit the proper behavior with consistent reinforcement.

Another training issue that sometimes comes up is to stop dog chasing since it can be dangerous to the dog as well as the individuals involved. There are different methods to use to stop dog chasing and preventing this issue requires that the individual be consistent with whatever method he chooses to use.

Prevention

One way to stop dogs from chasing cars is to never allow the dog to be outside without supervision and a leash. Dogs should never be allowed to run freely outside since they endanger themselves and others when they come near the road.

Even if the individual lives in a rural area where there are not many cars, the dog should be trained to stay within its yard, or territory, so that it does not get into the road and cause an accident. This will also stop a dog from chasing individuals that come around the dog's territory.

Allowing a dog to chase people or other animals is endangering the dog and the other people or creatures. This also helps to create aggression in the dog, something that dog owners do not want to foster in their family pet.

Every time your dog is chasing you or trying to play with you, you do not want to give any positive reinforcement to your dog. Although chasing each other might be very fun but you are actually cultivating aggressive behavior in your dog as well as chasing behavior. No dog owners will want that to happen.

The method to stop dog from chasing is not to run away from a dog when he is trying to play in this way. You should be turning your back to your dog and not to give any attention to your dog when it is displaying this behavior. Once your dog decide to calm down, then you can start to pay him attention and praise him.

One other method you can use to reinforce a good behavior and stop a dog chasing is to tell the dog to sit if it starts to chase you. Only when the dog obeys and sits down will you start to give him your attention. Doing so will help to reinforce the positive behavior and avoid other negative behaviors.

How To Stop A Dog From Digging Methods

If you have a dog, then you already know that it can be very rewarding. However, you also probably know that dog digging can be incredibly annoying to deal with. This nasty habit has driven every dog owner up the wall. These people will most likely spend several weeks ripping their hair out trying to teach themselves how to stop a dog from digging.

If you have lady luck on your side, then you will not have a difficult time stopping your dog from digging. Unfortunately, there are other people that will go through hell and still fail. If you need some additional help, you should carefully read the techniques listed below because they have helped some dog owners succeed and keep their sanity.

One of the last things that you want to see around your lawn are random holes. If you want to prevent this from happening, you should begin by figuring out why your dog is digging in the first place. A very common reason why a dog will begin digging is because he is simply bored. You can prevent boredom from occurring by just spending time with him each day. Talking to your dog or playing with him can help prevent the onset of boredom. You can also try brushing or petting him if talking and playing fails.

The scents coming from your yard can be another reason for dog digging behavior. Dogs use scents as a means of interacting with their surroundings. Your dog may want to explore these scents by digging around the vegetable garden or flower bed in your yard.

If you place a sprinkler in your yard, you might be able to stop random holes from showing up in these areas. Just turn on the sprinkler whenever you see your dog digging in an area that you do not want him digging in and the water should have him running scared. He will eventually give up digging in this area if you shower him with water for a long enough time.

If your canine has a digging problem, do not be surprised if you find holes under your fence. It is very common for canine owners to find holes dug under the fence. There are good reasons why your dog wants to dig under the fence.

The first reason is because your canine may want to just go out for a walk which makes sense because all canines want some exercise. A second reason your canine might want to dig a hole under your fence is because your dog might find something in your neighborhood such as another dog or a smell really appealing and want to get to it.

You should not let the holes under your fence worry you too much. Luckily, there are straightforward solutions to this problem that you can try using that will prevent you from going crazy. Walking your canine around the surrounding areas on a daily basis is an easy and cheap solution that has worked in some cases. This works because you are allowing him to explore the neighborhood which will give him the chance to satisfy his curiosity about a certain smell or another dog.

Even if your dog does not dig, walking him everyday is a good idea. Just because it is a good form of exercise for dogs and it gives you and your dog some more time to get to know one another.

If the first option does not work, you can also try pouring some concrete right at the base of the fence. Once the concrete dries, your dog will have a difficult time trying to dig through this new barrier. Eventually, he will give up digging under your fence just because it will be futile and to spare his nails.

How to stop a dog from digging is a common question that many frustrated canine owners will unfortunately have to find an answer to. If you have read this article carefully, then you realize that there are many ways to stop your canine from populating your yard with holes. If the solutions provided by this article do not solve your problem, you might be able to purchase a hardcover book or ebook that will give you the answers you need. There are many resources out there that might be able to provide you with the correct solution. Whether you find it now or later on will depend on how much time you are willing to spend looking for it.

How to Stop Dogs Begging

Imagine sitting down to eat you meal, and just as you sit down your dog starts whining and won't give up till you give him some food. Not the most pleasant way to finish your day I wouldn't suspect. Whining dogs can be very irritating and annoying.

You need to do something about this bad behaviour as soon as possible because if left untreated, it will in most cases only get worse.

Teaching a dog to stop begging and whining is an up hill battle. The problem is that whether you know it or not, you have taught your dog to behave in that way. By giving in at times in the past when you dog has begged, you have shown your dog that begging gets results. In order to correct this behavior you will need to apply some strategic training strategies.

The first step in training you dog that whining is not acceptable is to remove your dog from your presence. During meal time put your dog outside or in some other room where you remain out of sight. This will begin to teach your dog that he is not involved in the dining process.

Initially your dog may bark and resent being excluded from meal time. Chances are he will come to the window and try to beg to come back in from there. The best thing to do is to totally ignore him until after diner time. Under no circumstances should you give in to your dogs begging.

If you do give in, you'll have to start this training process again.

Another approach that can sometimes work well to stop the begging and whining is to feed your dog at the same time you are eating. This does two things, firstly it will distract your dog and give him something to focus on so he doesn't bother you, and secondly it will allow your dog to still feel part of the family and not so removed as in the isolation approach mentioned above.

The thing you must remember when teaching your dog not to beg is to ensure that he does not eat from your table, and that you are consistent in his training. Never stray from what you are doing with him because as soon as you do he will be back to his begging ways. Another thing make sure if you have children that you instill in them that they should not feed the dog as well.

Don't Allow Your Dog To Bite Others

>> 6/10/09

You need to make sure that you know how to stop dog biting, because you don't want your dog to bite you, and of course not your children or any of the guests that you have over to your house. Whether your dog is a brand new puppy that you just got or a dog that you have had for years, if they have a problem with biting then you are going to need to make sure that you address the problem right away, stop dog biting and never leave it.

The last thing that you would want, but which could potentially happen, is if you were to take your dog for a walk or they were to get out on their own by accident and ended up biting someone, because then they may actually end up getting put down. This is why you are going to need to make sure that you know how to stop dog biting.

Tips

There are more than 1 method that you can use to stop your dog from biting. Obviously, some of those methods tend to be much more effective than others. One example is giving your dog some chew toys. Sound too simple, huh? The problem is quite a lot of dog owners never realize how simple things can be. If you do not have any chew toys for your dog, he will just go and search for other things to bite and chew on.

You also want to make sure that you begin your training very early on. Of course if you get a dog that is already in adulthood you are not going to be able to go back in time and train them as a puppy, but you still want to train them as soon as possible then and not leave this any longer than you absolutely have to.

The faster you begin training your pet dog, the better outcome you are going to get since it will be much easier for the dog to learn new things.

Another alternative is to use a muzzle on the dog's mouth till they learn not to bite people. Some people might believe that it is a cruel thing to do but it is not going to cause any harm to the dog. You are only trying to educate your dog that it is not okay for them to open their mouth and bite people.

These are all good tidbits of information that help you to stop your dog from biting and ensure that he is as obedient as you want him to be.

A Crate Could Be Your Dog's Best Friend

>> 6/9/09

Let's talk crates and dogs. But before we do, let's clarify that the kinds of crates we'll be discussing aren't what some of you may be visualizing. These aren't wooden freight delivery crates full of mysterious artifacts from an Egyptian temple. Crating dogs is a general term for keeping your dog in a cage (called a crate) for the purposes of potty training and to provide it with a secure "home" it can call its own.

When my sister came over to my house to meet my new puppy for the first time, she was shocked to see we had a crate for our dog. I wasn't surprised by her reaction when she first saw the crate. In fact, I expected it. Truth be told, many people feel the same way. I, myself, used to think that keeping a dog in a crate was down-right cruel until I learned that crate training can be a wonderful tool when it comes to caring for and even protecting your pup and something it will actually come to love.

Yes, I agree, crates don't look very appealing. I, for one, wouldn't want to be kept in a crate. Then again, I'm not a dog. The truth is, most dogs actually LIKE their crates. Dogs are similar to wolves. Both enjoy a cozy den-like atmosphere and that is exactly what a crate becomes to your four-legged friend.

Eventually, if used correctly, your pup will learn to love his crate! My dog, who now happens to be ten years old, still goes into her crate to nap or escape from things like thunderstorms. I leave the door of the crate open and she is free to come and go as she wishes. You see, her crate has become her sanctuary. It is her special place to rest or take a break from the other animals of the house when she is not in the mood to play.

While we're certainly pleased our pup has a sanctuary she can call her own, the real point behind crates is to benefit the owner. Not only do they provide us a safe and secure place to keep our pets when strangers such as repair men come to visit, they can be a perfect way to potty train your pooch.

It can't be stressed enough, however, that you must use your crate properly or you will completely defeat its purpose and risk emotional damage to your dog. First and foremost, don't leave your puppy in its crate for longer than five hours and only that if it's unavoidable (because of your job, for example). While the premise behind the crate is to play on your dog's instinct not to eliminate where it sleeps, even the strongest instinct can't win out against a young dog's bladder.

You must also never use your crate as a means of punishment. This isn't your dog's timeout-for-bad-behavior corner. You want your pup to think of its crate as a cozy, safe sanctuary, not someplace it desperately wants to avoid. Using it for punishment will only make your dog fear or resist being crated. Make the crate someplace it wants to go when it's time for a break. Keeping a favorite chew toy or one of your old socks (the scent will comfort him since it smells like his favorite person) in the crate will contribute to the crate being a sanctuary.

Choosing a crate for your dog is less about style than it is about size. You're shooting for something large enough to allow your dog to sleep comfortably and turn around in. But bigger isn't better. Too large of a crate will defeat potty training purposes and your dog may eliminate in one corner while sleeping in another. If you purchase a larger crate because your dog is still growing, use a divider to make it small enough to accommodate your dog and your potty-training objective.

Wire crates are probably your best bet. They allow better air flow and better viewing for your pup. At night, you can cover the wire crate with a blanket so that you form a den like atmosphere (your dog will like this!).

Overall, crates, when used correctly, are wonderful training tools. If you really don't like the idea of a crate, then a puppy play pen might be more your speed. No matter which you choose, it is important to keep your puppy safe from potentially dangerous situations.

House Training A Dog - Easy Techniques

>> 6/8/09

Patience and determination are the traits that you will have to have during the beginning stages of house training a dog. For your efforts to pay off, it will take time and consistent habits. Don't get worried because it can be done. Although you can't keep an eye on the dog all day long, there are still steps you can take to accomplish the desired results.

Accidents can't be avoided with puppies. During the early months of their growing stages, they don't have complete bowel and bladder control. They will tinkle will everywhere. That will change as they grow.

To start out, find a suitable, out of the way area to make a restricted home for the dog. Cover the floor with paper. Also cover the floor with their food, water, bed, and any play toys they enjoy. This is the first test. Typically, your dog will not potty on his bed or on his food or water. They may not care about the toys at the time.

This is a great way to begin training. The dog will begin to use the paper somewhere away from the places he enjoys or that are comforting to him. Finally, they will find a spot that they will always do it in. This will be their own self-discovered personal bathroom.

Once you notice this happening, put newspapers in the other areas of your home that are located a good distance away from the confined area. The dog will most likely, once let out of the area and into other parts of the house, begin to go to the bathroom anywhere to his liking. When they do that, put their nose near the disgusting odor, as they are sensitive to their own smell. Then direct them to the newspaper where they should have done it on. Repeat these procedures in an effort to get them to smarten up and catch on. This gets exhausting, but it has its positive results.

Before you know it, your dog will get accustomed to using the paper. Once they do, move it to various areas in the house to train your dog to find the paper and use it regardless of the location. When they use the paper properly on a consistent basis, reward them for their excellent learning abilities and behavior. This is the first phase of the successful completion of your dog's training. Do you see how easy house training a dog can be?

Now, how do you get them to stop using the papers and go outdoors instead? Well, start a new process by gathering up all of the unused papers on the floor. Then position these papers by your entryways to the backyard.

At this time, the dog is trained to use the paper. When he uses the paper as you have done such a good job training him to do, put their nose near it and point to the door. Then open the door and let him run out and play. By consistently repeating this process, your dog will soon catch on and will begin scratching the door when it is time to go potty.

How You Can Stop Your Dog From Licking

>> 6/7/09

For some dog owners, they consider licking as a form of love and attention by their pet dog. However, it can be quite annoying and irritating when there are guests coming into the house and your dog is trying to welcome them with excessive licking.

Even though dog licking is not something that is as dangerous as jumping or aggression, it is still not an appropriate behavior for a dog. It might also cause you embarrassment and your guest might feel uncomfortable in the presence of an over friendly licking dog.

Tips

Consistency is probably one of the most important tips that a dog owner should follow, from the time the dog is still young. You should teach your dog to behave to you the same way you want your dog to behave towards other people.

For example, if you allow your dog to jump on you, your dog will be confused as to why it is not okay for him to jump on others. If you allow your dog to lick your hands or face, your dog will be confused when it is not allowed to lick other people's face or hands. Regardless of the type of dog training, consistency is the key. You want to show your dog the expected behavior, and then reinforce it consistently.

Although as a dog owner, you will feel wonderful that your dog is licking you when you arrive home, showering you with excitement and a whole lot of attention, there are many other ways that are more appropriate for your dog to show you attention and excitement other than licking. 1 simple way to stop your dog from licking you is to turn away each time he tries to lick you.

You shouldn't pay any attention to him or establish any eye contact with your dog when it is licking you. Only when your dog has stopped licking you will you start to give him the attention he wants and praise him for the correct behavior. If your dog likes to lick you on your hand, you should stop your dog from licking by pulling your hand away from the dog and not giving him any eye contact until he stops doing so.

With the reinforcement of proper behavior, you are also training your dog not to lick other people who visits you. Since your dog knows he is not going to get any attention from you by licking you, he is unlikely going to lick other people.

The owner should also tell the individuals that visit the home what to do if the dog tries to lick them, demonstrating and reinforcing the same behavior the owner uses to stop dog licking.

Dog Biting Problems - As Serious As It Can Get

>> 6/5/09

Out of all the dog behavioral problems, biting is considered to be the worst and the most serious. Even if your dog goes on the couch quite often, it might not present you as much problem as from a biting behavior. Some communities insist on putting the dog down if he bites someone severely. If your dog has a biting problem it can even mean the end of his life. So you have to take immediate action to solve the biting problem of your dog.

On the other hand, biting problems are common and quite normal in case of puppies. This problem arises mostly during their teething period when they have an uncontrollable urge to chew and bite on anything and everything. Though a puppy bite might break your skin it will not pose any other serious problems. However, this is the right time and age to train your puppy not to bite ever again

You don't have to be cruel or give harsh punishments to train your puppy. They are very sensitive creatures and all you need to make them repent is a firm No! or a censorious Bad Dog, whenever they try to bite you. When your puppy bites you, pull your hand away and repeat the firm phrase again and again which will make him realize that he is hurting you.

Most often a dog bites due to some psychological reasons. A dog takes a bite not just because he wants to hurt something or someone. They also bite to hold on to something or they bite a person or another dog to warn them of something, or they bite just for the joy of it. The best way to break the biting problem of your dog is to start early, when he is still a puppy.

But then, some dogs are naturally aggressive and bite because they are inherently temperamental. To take care of such dogs you have to send them to an obedience school.

You have to take this problem very seriously and take steps to find the best help. Getting help from professional dog trainers are probably the only option to solve this problem.

If you have a pooch with biting problems in your neighborhood, the best defence is to be prepared with a bottle of pepper spray that is specially formulated to combat biting dogs. Never hesitate to use the pepper spray if any dog tries to bite you. Or, you could opt for a friendlier approach by offering a beef jerky.

How to Easily Stop Dog Aggression

>> 6/3/09

Aggression in dogs is a very serious and potentially dangerous problem in most dogs. However, the problem can easily be solved by having dog aggression training.

Every year millions of people experience the pain of being bitten by a dog, in most cases, the victim is a child.

Aggression in dogs can be brought about in a number of ways. Sometimes the environment that they live in plays a big part, while other times they inherit aggressive behavior. Some breeds are more likely to be aggressive than others, Akita's and Bulldogs are fine examples of this. As dogs traditionally live in packs, they are also built to fight for the top position and sometimes do this using aggression.

The most important thing is that you understand this particular behavior and work towards actively training them to stray away from these aggressive tendencies. If you take the time to establish yourself as the leader of the pack, your dog will be more likely to follow your leadership, than if you simply give in to the dog. Once you give in then you can expect some of those aggressive behaviors to become worse and for some of them to be geared towards you.

A few different causes of dog aggression include fear, and to protect their home. They are also usually extremely aggressive to other dogs especially if they are the same sex. However, no matter what type your dog of aggression your dog has, you will need to start their training as soon as possible.

The first thing you must do in order to stop the dog from being aggressive is to start your dog socializing with other dogs and people as soon as you can. Some people say that the trainings should not start till your dog is over a year old; however it would be much better to start this training while the dog is roughly about 3 months old. If the problem is in an adult dog then you will need to learn some aggressive dog training ideas for older dogs.

You should know that your dog is able to learn what you have to teach them, especially when aggressive behavior is involved. If you would like to train the dog to remain calm and follow your commands, you will want to be consistent, patient and above all you will need to be the leader of the pack. You will also want to learn how to reward good behavior and to give praise that is calm and will make them feel like what they did needs to be repeated in order to get the same treatment.

When training an aggressive dog, do it slowly over time. Don't expect results from one day to the next and always be prepared for your dog to lash out. If your dog is showing too much aggression, consider taking him to a vet. Underlying medical conditions may be causing the aggression.
